I haven't used Plum since the formula changed. I've been blue for a quite some time, would like to go back to purple. Which dyes would be closest to the old plum in Adore or Directions? As much as I love SFX, I am not going to bother, due to regular sock issues. I was looking at Adore Rich Eggplant, but it would appear to fade like new Plum formula, is that right? My perfect purple combo was half Directions Plum/Neon Blue. The Plum would still be the dominant colour, but it would fade beautifully, neither pink nor blue.
I also used to mix Plum and Neon Blue, but I mostly had it as a pastel. My replacement has been SFX Deep Purple and Blue Velvet, but they are both pretty hard to get hold of consistently.
You can mix nice purples with Rose Red, maybe try adding it to Midnight Blue if you want a really dark purple.
Pravana violet would be another good choice, it is a long lasting balanced purple.
Thanks π I'd like to stay with Adore or Directions. I might try the Rose Red and blue mix. Not sure about Midnight Blue or Neon Blue tough, it will depend on how dark I want it. I've been using Midnight Blue for so long, as I was combining it with Blue Velvet, but have since switched to Adore Royal Navy, a change might be nice.
How does the Rose Red stain or transfer though? That's part of the reason I was thinking of finding an Adore equivalent. Shame the Rich Eggplant appears to fade like the new Plum from a previous post I've seen. I do remember the Neon Blue being alright as far as Directions dyes go, comparatively speaking.
Also, anyone have anything to add about Adore Purple Rage?
Forgot to ask what ratio of Rose Red to blue do I need?
Rose Red is the stainiest stainer that ever stained. It gets EVERYWHERE. Everything will be pink forever. It's a shame because it is hands down the best colour ever, if you ask me.
I found rose red absolutely fine when I diluted it heavily. I think it was 3/4 conditioner. Didn't stain my hands etc, did stain my hair a bit though, but no more than any other pink.
It is fine when diluted or used in mixes, it is really strongly pigmented so you only need the tiniest amount.
Purple Rage is a great purple, doesn't transfer, lasts for ages, fades pink. I would use it if I didn't have Deep purple
Thank you for all your advice. I was afraid that Rose Red might be staining, though yes, as a mix would be fine. I am concerned about it staining my hair pink though as I will likely go back to blue at some point, though no longer navy, but Neon Blue instead, which was my first blue ever a few years back.
I need to do my roots this weekend, only time I have before Christmas, I will not have any time to fade my hair. I've got serious build-up, really dark blue, almost black at the ends in certain lights, and my hair is really long. I'll want to be patient to fade it, so will wait until after the holidays. I will do navy one last time as I have a couple of bottles anyhow.
I think I might try the Purple Rage. If I find it too pink as it fades, I may well add a little blue to it like I used to do to the old Plum, especially since I will surely have some blue left.
Diluted Rose Red over your current blue would get you to purple. I don't find Rose Red stains hair much, less than old formula Plum, Deep Purple or Virgin Rose anyway. It should be easy enough to cover with a blue later.
The thing is there is just so much build-up, adding any colour to what I currently have wouldn't make much of a difference on the bottom half for sure, it's just so dark. I'll have to fade it if I want any noticeable change.
I thought about putting the Rose Red over blue, but it means my roots will turn pink. I need something I can use regularly, when I change a colour I like to stay like that for a while. I tweak with different mixes and shades within that colour until I find the perfect one, but stay that colour. It's also how I manage to have long healthy hair, just leaving it be for a while, not too much change, so going back to blue wouldn't be for a while. I'm sure you're no stranger to that Wicked Pixie π
So if I apply pink it doesn't solve my root problem, and all the following regrowth. This is why I faded my purple before going blue the last time, it was just simpler in the long run. Hence my asking about a purple dye.
Decisions, decisions π
I've never got RR to not stain no matter how much I dilute it, but my hair is quite "leaky".
I strand tested Rose red and Virgin Rose to compare once, and Rose Red wad stronger, it needed far less dye to make the same shade of pastel, but the Rose Red fully faded, the Virgin Rose lasted longer and stained. I have also managed to fully remove Rose Red on several occasions (back to platinum blonde) with a colour remover.
So I find Rose Red less of a problem than midnight blue or old formula plum.
I actually bought a new pot of Rose Red yesterday, and it isn't as strongly pigmented as it used to be
Ooooh
I really wish Directions would stop messing with their formulas π
