But when it fades, I see that brassy orange-y tint resurface from the golden copper tones I once had. I'm actually going to my salon guy next week to have him take me to the darker side of red professionally to see if that helps. After that, for the maintenance, I have Special Effects blood red and deep purple that I can mix together to achieve something more on the cooler or pink-toned side as opposed to the dreaded orange when it starts to fade. Do I need to add another color in there too for some balance? What will cancel out the copper for good or do I just have to wait until enough layers of the darker reds have covered it? My base color is a medium chocolate brown.
My cynicism tells me I either need to have it bleached out and start over, or just get over it and be patient. Any tips are appreciated!
I wouldn't bother with the professional. It'll just be a permanent colour over what you have and, ironically, permanent reds fade faster than semis. Just go straight for the special effects now. Mix up a colour you like. When you've dyed it, use any left overs to add to your conditioner. Then just use that every time you wash and it'll top up the colour and cancel out the orange coming through.
Go no where near the bleach, that's in no way necessary. If you really feel the need to strip the colour, start with a colour remover. It's just not needed when you're going darker.
I totally agree with Janine, just wanted to add that you will only need to add a tiny amount of Deep Purple to the Blood red as it is super strongly pigmented and will take over otherwise.
Thank you both for your input! My instinct agrees with you so now I feel fortified in my goal! 8)
