Hello! So I'm a former hair stylist, but I've never done my hair an unnatural color before :-X But I'm ready and excited! I want to do a purple, but a warmer pinky purple as opposed to a blue violet. I ordered Pravana in Wild Orchid last night, but now I'm kinda second guessing myself because I feel like it's going to be TOO pink. Would it be alright to mix Manic Panic in Ultra Violet with Wild Orchid? What ratio do you think I should mix at, or is it all just eyeballing it? Like I said, I'm very new to all this funky color stuff! My hair is currently a very faded coppery red. I'm going to use Color Zap on it and it'll probably be around a level 7(ish) and very, very orange. Thanks!!
The orange in your base will pull any purple to a warmer shade, so Wild Orchid on it's own could look more red than purple.
Perfectly fine to mix different brands of direct dyes, I just eyeball it, what you see in the bowl is pretty much what you get in your hair, but always do a strand test to check.
So maybe I should have gotten Pravana in Violet instead then? I was just so worried about it coming out too blue, even with the orange base. :/ Maybe I'll just mix a tiny bit of Wild Orchid into the Manic Panic... I guess I won't know until it gets here and I start mixing!
Purple over orange is always tricky, if it is too blue you create brown tones, too pink you get burgundy. By mixing your own you can tweak it to suit your base.
I use Pravana violet and aside from any issues with your current color I can say that the violet is extemely dark and strong. I have had one tube for 9 months with consistant coloring. (I dilute for a lighter color) I also have wild orchid and that fades a lot faster. Fading/color removing would help a lot, especially with Wild Orchid alone. I think adding a dab of blue or bluer purple would help but only a very little bit. Blues in general tend to be strong.
As far as mixing brands, I've found it works fine (I thought that was the original question, now I'm not sure lol)
