SO, I wanted to go lavender, I was a pretty light brown but decided to bleach it anyway.

I knew it was to brassy so I toned it

I even preformed a color strand test to make sure the lavender would take to my hair.

I loved it and wanted exactly this..

I used ion semi permanent lavender and I noticed it was very thick and I could tell it was barely depositing in my hair. I tried putting a dark purple on top too so it could have a pretty purple / lavender. You know, trying to be hip.

3 hours later, I wash it all out, the top was still pretty much brown with almost black strands and my tips are like this

I honestly hate it. It looks sooo faded, when obviously it's a day old smh.. and I was just wondering what should I do or what brand of dye I should use to try to redo this?

Send me links, advice, experiences, pictures of your past purples/ what brand, anything will help.

- no I'm not a professional but I work at a beauty supply store, that has frequent professionals that come in and I asked a couple of beauticians, and they gave me some guidance on what to do. So I thought I had everything under control but guess not lol

It looks like you didn't get it spread evenly. Doing another application would help sort that out. Direct dyes don't spread out while they're on your hair like bleach and oxidative colours do. There's no chemical reaction, so where it sits is where it dyes. I often comb the dye through my hair to get it more even. Like you though, I have a lot of hair (even though it's short) and it needs a lot of dye to look even and then I still miss patches! Where as some with hair longer than yours can use a single tub for their hair (even very thick hair) I need at least a whole tub even though mine is short. So, in your case, I'd say a combination of not enough dye and not quite evenly distributed.

Unfortunately, though you managed to get a lavender like colour on your swatch, your hair is too dark for lavender. You must have picked out a very pale section for your sample.

I'm not a fan of purple as it looks horrible on me (it's about the only colour I don't do, unless it's a very pink purple), so I can't help much more. I like Special Effects dyes though. Highly pigmented and long lasting.

Ion is notoriously difficult to spread because it is so thick. Other brands are much thinner, the consistency of conditioner.
You can also dilute stronger purples with conditioner to make the lavender shade, but lavender will only show on the tips. You can Use a purple on the top and dilute it for the tips if you want a gradient, but the top parts won't be a vivid shade.
I would also recommend Special Effects, Deep Purple would cover the brown, (you would need to add some conditioner to stop it looking blackish) and it dilutes to a pinky lavender.
Did you apply the dye to shampooed but unconditioned hair? Conditioner, especially if silicone based can block the absorption of direct dyes

I guess you didn´t have enought light hair. I wanted pavender hair too, my base is dark brown a s your, but I´ve been dyeing my hair with box colour couple years before semipermanent. I tried the bleach, but didn´t want to fry my hair 😀 so the first try I ended up with dark purple witch faded to blue. I redye my hair since january and get the hair lighter everytime I do my roots.
So don´t worry You were doomed from the start 😀
I would let the hair rest a bit, then do a bleach bath to get the lighter shade and work from darker purple to lighter..or have it done at a saloon, I wouldn´t try it at home at once 🙂
