I have no clue what I'm doing..

Hullo! I usually have my hair chemically dyed but I'm sensitive to PPD and don't really want to worsen that allergy, so I'm looking for PPD-free ways to dye my hair. I've got naturally mid-brown hair, but I've already got quite a bit of grey in it, and I've been told that 'only permanent hair dyes will cover grey' :/.

I've tried Lush Henna, but that was a horribly messy disaster which, according to my hairdresser, left metallic salts in my hair which then made it impossible to dye over/bleach/do anything with.

I'm hoping Adore hair dye might cover the grey, I've heard good things about it, so fingers crossed. I've bought a bottle from Beeunique and I'm waiting for it to arrive. I usually wash my hair daily, but I know  that's something I'll have to cut back on if I want to prolong my hair colour.  I know nothing about how to care for my hair whilst I have the semi-permanent dye on it!  I looked at the shampoo thread and I've decided to use the Naked haircare range, and perhaps wash mainly with conditioner, limiting the amount of times I use shampoo.  What is the colour transfer like with Adore hair dyes?  Am I going to have to stay out of the rain?  ๐Ÿ˜ฎ Am I still going to be able to use my serums and straightening creams as normal or is it going to cause the colour to bleed?  Sorry for all the stupid questions, I really have no clue, any advice is welcomed from people who are used to Adore dyes ๐Ÿ™‚

The bad news is that dyes like Adore don't generally stick well to grey hair. If they cover it to begin with it generally washes off pretty quickly.
The good news is that there are ways around this.
To get good coverage you need to make your grey hair more porous so it can absorb the direct dye. One way is to pre-soften your hair by putting neat peroxide on it for 10 minutes or so and rinsing prior to application. In my experience this helps the dye to stick, but you get a paler version of the colour on the grey hairs.
If you want total coverage, with the greys the same colour as the rest of your hair you need to bleach first. You don't need a huge amount of lift for a medium brown, so a gentle low volume bleach bath should suffice. Then add the Adore and it will cover everything evenly.
It will fade gradually, but there are lots of ways to keep the colour vibrant. Firstly avoid hot water and shampoo. SLS free shampoo or CO washing will help to prevent fade, as will washing as infrequently as possible in the coolest water possible. Add some of the Adore dye to your regular conditioner and you can top the colour up every time you wash. A final rinse in cold water or a vinegar rinse will help to close the cuticle and seal the colour in.
I have found Adore to be a great brand for not bleeding/rubbing off. You can use your regular products and you don't have to worry about being caught in the rain. If you do get some colour transfer, a quick shampoo should remove any excess dye, but I haven't had issues with Adore personally.
ETA: there is also a range of Adore dyes specifically designed to cover grey, Adore Plus, but I have never used it myself.

I'm pretty sure Lush's Henna isn't bad quality + I don't think it has metallic salts in it.
