So I've been spoiled the past 11 years with the staying power of Atomic Pink. I changed my color last November using SFX iguana green & sonic green. I thought I would get sick of the color and want to go back to pink, but I am still in love with the color.
But I'm not in love with the upkeep. It fades drastically after one cold shampoo, even when I use a conditioner with dye mixed in. I've ended up basically redying my hair in the shower, and with my long hair and limited finances, I need to buy a new bottle every four weeks (I think with the atomic pink I bought it once every six months) and it's killing me.
To the point: are there other green dyes with better staying power that I don't know about? There's not much info on green hair on the internet like there are for, say, purple or pink. I only wash my hair once a week and dry shampoo is my best friend. But are there any other tips I've missed? or have I just been too spoiled by the magic of atomic pink that nothing will ever come close as far as easy up keep?
Please and thank you.
Greens can be tricky. I would try mixing your own from a long lasting blue and yellow. Ions blues are as permanent as AP if you can access them, Pravana Yellow is the longest lasting yellow I know of, although most neon yellows last pretty well too.
Skipping shampoo entirely may help too.
Yes, Ion Colour Brilliance Brights, all the blues stick like crazy.
Pravana yellow is the only non-neon yellow that really sticks IME, it is as permanent as direct dyes get. SFX hasn't actually produced their yellow for years, but MP Electric banana is a fair neon yellow
Awesome. I'll go to Sally's tonight and grab some blue. Hopefully I can find some Pravana easy, if not I'll try manic panic. Thank you!
I had my hair dyed with manic panic enchanted forest. It lasted really good. I had to re-dye my hair in only 2 months. But even if it was 2 months, it was only slighly lighter. I just wanted dark colour, that's why I dyed it again in 2 months. If this is the green you want, try it. If you want something lighter, I have no idea what to reccomend, as I've never tried lighter shades.
I'm getting great results with Directions Alpine at the moment, even over a dark base colour- it is a dark green though with a very blue tone to it.
See, I love Alpine Green but it just doesn't last in my hair. I have never tried it on a dark base in my own hair though, maybe that is the secret. Going to use some heavily diluted on my white base soon because it makes the most gorgeous mint/aqua shade.

that's actually pretty close to the color I'm trying to maintain. I'll see if Sally's has that in stock. I haven't had the *best* luck with MP before, but I've only tried Atomic Turquoise a few years ago.
Actually Wicked Pixie I've never had success with any Directions over a bleached base-they always fade a bit powdery looking- maybe the dark base gives it a bit of depth? Either way I'm loving it (and thanks for the suggestion you gave me a while back of switching to Directions Violet rather than plum for my purple, I'm surprised how vibrant and long lasting it is!)
Can't wait to see it diluted, that sounds delicious!
It was darker when I freshly dyed my hair, but became what you see on the picture after about 2 weeks. After that my hair hasn't changed colour for 3 more weeks and then very slowly started to fade. I don't like light green colours, so I dyed my hair again. The second picture was freshly dyed hair on a daylight (I was standing in front of a window). The first one is faded (after 2 months).
I just wanted to say I tried a mix of the Ion blue, Pravana yellow, and the MP enchanted Forrest (mixed with conditioner) and it's really worked out great. It's been two and a half weeks and I've washed my hair every other day with warm water just to see what it would be like when it fades. It has definitely faded, but only a bit. It's still really pretty pretty and I'm not embarrassed by what my hair color is!
I also find it amusing that where I used to have SFX Atomic/cupcake pink blend is a different color green then the rest of my hair - which I just left bleached. That stuff really never goes away!
Thanks again for the advice!
I really want to see the picture if it's possible. I'm glad you're satisfied with colour. 😍😍
Here's some pictures of it three weeks faded. I'm actually about to touch up my roots/reduce my hair tonight so I can add fresh dyed pics later.
the pictures aren't 100% true since they looked more blue in the pics than in real life, so I tweaked them to look more like how it does in real life. And sunglasses because I just woke up lol.

It's lovely, very mermaidy and shiney!
