What colors are these?

Hi everyone! I've been doing my own hair for a few years and I'm great at the technique (I usually balayage it) but I sometimes have trouble with the way I want the colors to come out..

I have naturally really dark hair with orange undertones, so I usually dye it a lighter ash brown and get blonde for the balayage part.. But the blonde only last fresh for a month or so before getting brassy and turning kinda dark orange. I absolute hate that, so currently my hair has the roots growing out wich is a dark brown, with the brassy bottom( even purple shampoo doesn't really help)

I'm so sick of it and just my hair in general I've been doing it the same for so long, I want to try something new. I found these two colors but have no idea how to achieve the colors.

What I also want to know is both these have a black base.. Would I be able to do it with just a medium/dark brown or black?
I just want to do them balayage but with either of these colors.. The first was described as smoky lilac and the second I have no idea I'm guessing something in the purple family or reds. I added close up too

Or just what colors do you think these are I know the second pic is one color and the Liliac one is two. How can I achieve either of these! *thx*

The lilac one would need a very light base for the lilac parts, much lighter than the orangey blonde you describe having now. Just out of interest, when your hair goes orange is it just the effect of blonde toner washing out or do you have a darker dye on the rest of your hair that could be staining it? The other photo of the darker colour looks like you could easily achieve that by using an Adore dye over the bayalage you have as it looks darker at the top and lighter towards the ends to me. The top part looks fairly similar to what I get from Adore Mahogany but the ends look a bit more gingery (however you may find you get that result anyway depending on whether your ends hold extra dye through being lighter or fade faster through being lighter - which would be trial and error as everyone's hair is different)For the record though mine tends to stay a deep red/ violet brown at the top over where I have permanent brown dye on and fades to a gold/ ginger brown at the ends where it was previously bleached.

Hi thank you so much for the reply.. Well for the lavender one I don't want it as light as the pic.. I want the lilac parts a tad bit darker so I'm not sure if I could just do it over my hair now..

The second one I'm scared to use red dye because everyone says red and black are the hardest to get out, or like go back light from.

Im it sure.. My overall hair is really dark brown and ive always lightened mostly from like the ear down. So it generally has an orangey/red tone even over my natural color, overall wether or not I dye it, but only when I go in the sun, If that makes sense. When the ends turn brassy and orange I'm not sure why that happens if it's because the toner is washing out or what it is honestly. My hair takes color super fast even bleach it starts to lighten super quick so I would think that if I died it that color the mahogany one it would fade a little at the bottom after a while like you mentioned.  I'll attach a pic of my current hair.

The top is my roots the dark brown than its the dyed lighter brown and than the balayage lol.. So gross so that's why idk if I should dye it just one color and give it a break or lighten it and balayage it again? In the pics though because there indoors but with natural light you can't really see the orange

What about this pic of the color what would you think that color is its like a super deep purple or maybe black with purple tint?

The problem with putting lilac over an orangey colour isn't that it wouldn't come out as light but is that the orange would counteract the smokey, ashy tones of the lilac and make it muddy, so really over an orangey base I think it would have to be a fairly strong actual purple.

I'm thinking maybe what's happening with your hair turning orange is that the light brown you're using on your mid lengths has a warm tone so it's fading down orangey and maybe staining your ends? What dye do you use on that part (brand/ colour number/ shade name). It seems your hair naturally has warm undertones as well, which the bleach will bring out.

As for how badly certain dyes stain it's hard to say, like I say mine washes down to a light golden brown on the ends because it is quite porous from previous bleaching but at the top where it has only been treated once with a permanent brown dye it holds the colour for a long time and probably won't ever completely fade out. Some colours do stain more than others but it also depends on your hair. (I haven't used black so I can't speak for that, but my experience of warm reds is that they usually fade back to a peachy colour, not truly blonde).

Your next step really probably depends on what you've been colouring the light brown bit with, you may be able to use a colour remover to get the orange out and then use something different that doesn't have an orange undertone to create your bayalage, you would need to use a colour remover (or fade it via other methods depending on what you used on it) before attempting the lilac too. If you wanted to go ahead with the darker colour you could achieve that with Adore dyes on top of what you already have.

Yes I understand what you mean about the putting the lilac over orange so I was planning on bleaching it again first.. The problem is since my hair had a root color than the balayage and now my natural roots I need to get it all one color first before either balayaging it or even just one color so that it's even..
I've heard of the color removers but never used one I've been so scared of them lol..

Well the time before last I had it professionally done but my stylist went out of the country for a few months and I got impatient and bought one of those at home highlighting kits I think it was revlon or loreal  can't remember. It worked well though it's just no matter if is professionally done or I do it it's still goes back to that orange color.

I usually always get ash medium brown on top than ashy blonde for the balayage parts and she puts a toner on after... But this I'm going to use profession stuff so is there a specific brand you can recommend?

Do you think if I just dye my overall color a light or medium brown and than do the lilac over it, it would come out like the pic but darker? Because I don't want it as light as the pic.
I think like you said my natural hair just has a red/orange tint to you but you can usually only see it in the sun.

You seem very knowledgable about this so thanks for your help I really appreciate it..
What would you suggest I do?
Or good brands of color/ bleach even pro stuff I can get.

What about this color is this a really dark purple or black hair with a purple tint you think? How could I get that the one in the second pic..

I don't think lilac would show over even a light ash brown, I know that for a light lilac you need your hair very light (you'll hear people on here mention 'inside of a banana peel' as the very light yellow you need for pastels)but I imagine even for a darker lilac shade you would probably need a yellow blonde or an ash blonde at least. I currently have some purple in my hair and even over my natural colour which is lightest, ashest brown (or probably mousey blonde) it comes out very dark purple, if I dilute it to make it lighter it just doesn't show up!

I think your best bet would be to use a colour remover if you have permanent dyes in your hair, are you in the UK? I used Colour B4 and it was really good (it is drying but not damaging so don't be afraid of it! Just rinse it more than you think you need to and don't use any dyes that mix with a developer for a while afterwards or the colour could re-oxidise and come back!) then if you need to lighten it more you can bleach or bleach bath if your hair is healthy enough to take it and if you still need to.

It may just be that the orange is the level your hair was lightened to under the brown dye (if you have been using ash dyes but it is still orange I suspect this is the case, especially if the bit that is most orange wasn't prelightened before you used the box dye as that will have lifted your colour somewhat but not a huge amount) but once you've used a colour remover you'll be able to see what you are dealing with a bit better.

There are direct dyes (dyes that you don't mix with peroxide, such as directions, adore etc) that you could use over what you have if you wanted to try the dark purple like that picture. I know Directions Plum is generally avoided as it rubs off quite badly onto clothes etc and fades to a greeny colour but maybe something like Adore Rich Eggplant? It will be brighter over where your hair is bleached though.

If you do want to use a permanent dye, I use Wella Koleston and it's really good but it will fade dramatically where your hair has been bleached so you will need to use something like adore regularly to keep it looking rich. ( you won't be able to keep going over it with permanent dye as every time you use something with peroxide in your hair gets a little more porous and holds dye less and less well, also the texture will get fried!)

Basically have a think about which you want to try, but bear in mind that for lilac you will have to go quite light and remove the orange first, and for the darker shades you will probably end up with slightly lighter and brighter ends (but those photos look a bit like that anyway!) but darker shades are often quite forgiving so it shouldn't be too bad. When you know exactly what you want we can give you a strategy to achieve it!

Yes I get what you mean about the lilac if I decide to do that I would for sure lighten it again like you said even just a medium or light blonde

No I'm in the us but I can order it online or have someone send it to me if it's better than the stuff here, here we have color oops and this loreal stuff but I heard they really ruin your hair that's why I was scared. Will it turn my hair orange, or just a light blonde? Or just back to its regular color, sorry like I said never used one lol.
What do you mean to not use dyes that use developer after, what kind would I be able to use than? Because all the ones I'm aware of use developer.

I would wanna use the temper to just get out all color and start fresh you know so even if it ends up lighting my hair a lot I can than just do the medium ash brown and balayage it again or the one color!

Yes I agree with you about the orange I think that's what happened also. That when they lightened my hair they didn't take it past the orange stage and thought they could tone it and it would work.
Yes I looked up the adore brand online last night and saw the eggplant one I think that would work or I could even mix two to make the color I want. That's fine if it's a little lighter where my hair was pre lightened but that's why I wanted to just get rid of everything and start fresh so that it's all the same you know.

That's the prob I'm so indecisive and scared to try something new haha.. Do you have an email i can contact you at its easier than using this site haha..

But yes I'm gonna think about it tonight and let you know and if appreciate it if you could give me some advice as to where to go from there.

I know some people would say to just go to a salon but I can't right now. So I wanna make sure I have all the correct info before I start doing it.

Hair has to be very light blonde to get lilac. Even a dark lilac won't work on medium blonde.

Color fix is the color remover you want. Color oops is damaging.

It won't give you your natural color. It'll take you back to the lightest it's been if you've bleached it or if you've never had it lighter than your natural color, it'll be anywhere from a bit lighter than your natural color to a lot lighter depending on how often it's been dyed. (sorry, haven't read the thread in its entirety so I'm not sure what your hair history is). If you have some hair that has been bleached/lightened with a blonde dye, and some that hasn't, you are not going to get an even base using colour removers. It can't restore colour that has been removed.

Adore is an example of a dye without developer.

I think things should be kept to the forum. Most people post on the forum so they can help others, if it's all in private email then it's only helping one person, not others who might have a similar issue. Besides, if someone else has the same issue we'd rather not have to repeat it again several times. Added to that, if you're using email you'll never get anyone else's input. Whilst lauralei is very knowledgable. It's much better to have more than one person interacting. It might not always happen as there's no need to repeat things someone else has said, but if we can add to it, that's always a bonus. I've been keeping an eye on the thread (as I do with most as I'm a moderator) I haven't read it in detail, but I saw that lauralei was giving sound advice as far as I could tell, so I hadn't felt the need to add anything further. I'm sure there have been others doing the same.

Yes I understand that about the lilac that's not what I was asking. I was saying if I wanted it to be darker than the pic how I could do that? Just put it over something that isn't bleach blond. I want a dark lilac..

The top area of my hair is my roots which is dark brown about 1 1/2 inches down than its the color that was dyed over it so like a medium brown. And some parts of the bottom were bleached for the balayage. So that's why I was asking about the color remover because even if it takes the dye out of the top part back to my natural color the bottom will be light like you said so it won't be even.

That's fine it was just a question because not many people replied and sometimes when I go on the site it says unavalaible that's why I asked about email it wasn't that big of a deal!

Thanks for your input though!

Hi again sorry if I wasn't supposed to ask about the email thing I'm new here and didn't know you guys would rather keep it on here.. Ok so I have two options..

If I wanted to do the lilac but a little bit darker how would I go about doing that...

Also if I find that will be too much for me to do on my own I can do this one that I'll attach in pics.. It's a rose gold over black hair, except I'd do my base a dark brown not black, it also faded to just a lighter color so I would think t would be easier to do.. He wrote underneath what he used but I can't decipher it because obvi I'm not an expert and he said pre lightened so obvi I would have to lighten t again or maybe not if I use the remover..It would be great if you could advise me on how to about about either one of these. Whichever is easiest is what I'll do..

In regards to the color remover, when I use it will it return hair to natural color or to an orange? Because I watched a bunch of YouTube vids and most of them had black hair and it just and it just made their hair back to like a light brown.. My roots are grown out about 1 1/2 so it's a dark brown, right after that is that dyed brown which is probably where I'll go up u til I don't think I need to do it to my roots, and I read anything bleached will just go back to a lightest blonde or orange..

So I guess in final I want to get everything one color, even if I have to dye it all one base color just so it's even, than know how to either lighten it to do the lilac or the rose gold?

Sorry if I'm explaining anything wrong or confusing

I don't think lilac would show over even a light ash brown, I know that for a light lilac you need your hair very light (you'll hear people on here mention 'inside of a banana peel' as the very light yellow you need for pastels)but I imagine even for a darker lilac shade you would probably need a yellow blonde or an ash blonde at least. The site being unavailable was a one off thing with the coding. Hasn't happened for years before this week and I got it sorted out as soon as I could! πŸ™‚ Asking for an email isn't not allowed, but it's just not really fair. As much as I like to help people, giving out my email to just anyone is tricky because you just don't know how that person is going to bahave.I've had issues with people in the past just messaging me continuously when I've helped them once. It can take a long time to help and it's easier when several people can chip in. As I said, you will sometimes just get one person answering as there's no point in repeating things. I wasn't making a big deal of it though,I was just explaining its better to keep it to the forum πŸ™‚

I did already answer your question about the colour remover. It won't go back to your natural colour. It will be lighter and probably with orange. If this hair was previously lightened before the brown hair dye then it will go lighter. It depends how light it was and if the brown has stained (it will have). Anything bleached and not dyed over will stay the same. And no, it won't be even, you'll have to sort that out after, but we can't help with that until we know what happens. Everybody's hair reacts differently.

As for lilac. Yes, I understand you want a darker lilac. But any shade of lilac is too light to go over anything darker than a light or very light blonde. It's a delicate colour and so just doesn't have the depth to go over anything darker than itself. Even if it is lighter than the shade you have on your hair at the time, it will go muddy. So any shade of lilac, you need to get to a light to a very light blonde. Medium blonde is too dark.

If however, it's actually just a purple you mean, or plum or darker richer spectrum of purples, that will be fine. It's hard to know what you mean by lilac as people interpret colours differently, so maybe we're thinking about a different shade. Anything that is in that delicate spectrum of shades, like the first picture you posted (and very often darker shades of them), you have to have a very pale blonde base. So, anything rich a deep base, fine. Anything delicate and pale blue based, won't work. Anything with a rich deep but blue base will pull more red the darker the base.

So, it all depends on how even you get the base. That depends on how the colour remover goes. Do that and then come back and we can advise from there. Until we know what the colour remover does we can't help on what to do after.

Thanks for your input Janine, particularly with the US brand of colour remover, I can never remember which one is the good one!

Just to chime in and try to explain the colour remover a slightly different way; colour remover won't do anything to your natural colour on your roots, on the parts of your hair that have been dyed it will remove tint and toner (so the parts of the dye that make the colour) but permanent dyes also lighten your hair, and if they have only lightened partially it will most likely be orange or yellow once the tint or toner is gone. There is nothing that can restore your natural colour to hair that has been colour-treated with anything that lightens. It is likely you will be left with natural roots, orange mid lengths and yellow/ blonde ends.

The dyes that don't use developer are the ones that the users of this site mainly use, things like Directions, Adore, Special Effects and Manic Panic. They come in one bottle and you don't mix them with anything. They are temporary dyes and generally last anything from 4 washes to a month depending on the colour you choose and the condition of your hair. They are generally used over prelightened hair and they are a true colour but are not opaque so the colour of your base will determine the colour you end up with.

This is why for lilac, which is a cool-toned colour you need hair that doesn't have orange to show through and make the lilac look brown! So even for a dark lilac you would need light blonde hair (not for the lightness but for the absence of orange and yellow tones) then you would use a darker lilac dye. As Janine says though you could do a deeper/ warmer purple without going lighter.

The rose gold would be easier for you to do than lilac over a warmer (more orangey ) base as it is a warm colour in itself, and you could acheive it with direct dyes (the ones such as Adore, Directions etc) as they can be combined and mixed together really easily to create custom colours or even diluted with conditioner to be made less opaque and lighter. I'm not sure what mix you'd use though, have a look at the 'Show off your hair' photos on here and see if there is anyone else who has done it.

As Janine says, use the colour remover then let us see the outcome of that as there's no real way of us knowing how that will turn out until you do it so we can't advise further yet!

Well I had problems with going on the site just this past week but it's fine. I'm a 26 year old girl what could I possibly do with someone's email, i just thought it would be easier it's not a big deal though!

I understand you already spoke about the color remover but I had heard differently from hair stylists so that's why I still wasn't sure about it.

Yes I meant lilac as in the the first pic I posted. It was describes as smokey lilac!

Sure I'll do the remover and get back to you, Thank you!

Until we know what the colour remover does we can't help on what to do after.

lol I wasn't making a big deal of the email thing and most definitely wasn't accusing you of planning to do bad things! I was just pointing out why it's not the done thing πŸ™‚

An awful lot of hairdressers don't yet understand what colour removers are, so misunderstand how they work. I had one tell me all my hair will fall out from using them and then tell me the only way to remove colour safely was with bleach. Obviously I didn't go back to him! Wasn't all that long ago either.

There's less in the Us than the UK, for some reason. We usually have less products for various reasons (EU regs, smaller market in general etc) so it's weird.

Don't use color oops though, it's color fix you want! Color oops is damaging. If colour B4 is better than color fix, I don't know. Colour B4 is definitely better than color oops though, just for the fact color oops is damaging.

Use Color Fix.

It's so weird how natural typing US color and UK colour is to me now...
