*waves* Hi there.
I'm new to the forum. I just bleached my hair after thorough research so I'm NOT freaking out that it's not the color I want. But really, it's quite gold and I'm not a fan of leaving the house like this.
I'm including the before's and after's for you. I bleached it and then I did a demi-permanent that mixed 8N with 10NA from Wella. On the roots I did 3:1 8A:10NA and on the rest I did a 1:1. But... I wouldn't say it helped much. At all. I left it on for like an hour. Sooo... I guess I should do something darker? What level would you suggest? Based on my research I wanted to do my demi-permanent 1 level lighter otherwise my hair would come out 1 level darker from what it is and I wanted to avoid that. My hair is definitely a mix of tones and shades, but I'd say my roots are at a 7, my midshaft at an 8, and my ends closer to a 9 (I had an ombre going into it, and I went easy bleaching my roots so they wouldn't be hot).
I'd like to bleach again in a month or so to get it another level or 2 lighter.
First picture is my before, 2nd is my before the demi permanent, and 3rd is after the demi-permanent (sorry it's night and my lamp is making it maybe a bit warmer than it really is. But it's not far off from the 2nd photo as far as gold tones).
On another note, my highlights are pretty much white at this point, so is there a way to avoid them like dying or falling out if I bleach again next month?
I'm not knowledgeable enough here to give any advice but I'm really curious about how you mixed colours to make them Demi and semi permanent? Is it the strength of the peroxide you used to mix the colour?
I only used demi colors. I used Wella Color Charm Demi which comes with it's own developer. I just mixed 2 of their colors to make more of a level 9 color since they don't have it.
Soo I ended up picking new colors since I'm inpatient and I didn't hear anything. I went with 7N and 7G in a 3:1 mixture. It definitely helped. It's still really warm (I guess I didn't really need any of that 7G), but it's not garish anymore. It'll do until it washes out in 4-6 weeks and I'm ready to try something different.
Demi dye doesn't require a developer.
If your dye requires mixing a developer then it's a semi permanent.
I used this from Sally's- http://www.sallybeauty.com/Demi-Haircolor/WELLA10,default,pd.html#start=12
They call the developer an "activating lotion."

Demi dye uses a lower strength of hydrogen peroxide, generally around 10%. They are also labelled (wrongly IMO) semi permanent on the high street shelves, often causing confusion, for example, Casting Creme by L'Oreal. Demis have no ammonia however
I'm interested in that Wella Color Charm! What is the developer that it's mixed with? I just used Goldwell colour mixed with 10% peroxide. It lifted my roots and I could feel a certain amount of damage even from that.
I just checked the Wells Colour Charm product info, I'm really confused! Maybe the activating lotion doesn't have peroxide but it's not too clear. Here's what it says:
Color Charm Clear and Cream Developers
• Formulated specifically for Color Charm Haircolor
• 20 and 40 volume strengths
• Create 10 volume by mixing equal parts 20 volume with distilled water
Color Charm Activating Lotion
• Formulated specifically for Color Charm Demi-Permanent Haircolor
• Provides proper level of activation for effective color deposit without lift

Color Charm Activating Lotion is 10 vol mox. It's just a fancy way of them describing things. Its enough to to lift much but to deposit the colour enough
Oh it does have peroxide then, that's too bad. *ott* I'm not sure how they can even call it a demi then. 10% peroxide is still damaging. But I'm getting this thread a little off topic I think. Sorry Beccad!
*Oops sorry getting my semis and Demis mixed up!*. Demi's always have peroxide, never mind me!

Demi dyes always have an activation/developer bottle which is a low volume peroxide. If you are looking to use a dye with no petoxide at all then you need to use a Semi dye like the ones sold on beeunique.
To answer the OP, the only way to avoid getting bleach on your highlights is to separate them from the rest of the hair. Its tedious and difficult but theres no other way. Once separated, you can coat them with vaseline (but it's difficult to wash out) or wrap them in cling film/aluminium foil
