Should I bleach previous dyed blonde hair?

Hello all!

I have been dying my hair blonde for some years now, but it always get to orange or brassy. I would like to go a little bit lighter and have the roots matching the lenght. I've never bleached it, but I think it will be the time to do it to have an equal color all over it. My question is...should I bleach it all or just the roots? And if I should bleach it all... Should I use different volume peroxides on the roots and on the lenght? I am really confused.

I am used to dye my hair at home by myself, but never bleached it, so I am confused.

Please, help!

Your hair is not lighter enough. You need to bleach your hair again. Do not waste your money on toners or shampoos as your hair has not been lightened enough. But you have to be really careful as your hair could snap since it has been lightened. I would go to a hair salon and get it done. Otherwise if you feel competent you could use 20 peroxide with bleach.  πŸ™‚

Your hair looks really light to me, but it's impossible to compare the photo of the length and roots because they're totally different light.

If the photo of the length is accurate, then all you need is a toner for that. A silver shampoo would be fine. Then just use the hair dye you've used in the past but on the roots only. The shampoo will remove the yellow tones.

Thank you for your advice. do you think I should start bleaching the ends and finally the roots? That's what I planned to do... And maybe use 20 peroxide in the lenght and use 30 peroxide on the roots? Or just belach the roots and do a bleach bath on the lenght? I've always used coloration, never bleached it. πŸ™‚

Hi Janineb! I've been using purple shampoo that is why the hair looks like this. however, the roots are really orange and I wanted to make an even colour all over the hair...I was thinking of bleaching just the top of the head to get rid of the orange... And then tone it with a semi permanent colour. What do u think? πŸ™‚

Ok, well, what dye did/do you use? On your roots and to get the colour on the lengths? What is your natural colour? How light do you want it?

The lengths are already pretty light, so you don't want to do much to them.

Ok, so I've been using a supermarket dye: Syoss 10-95 for some time now. i never applied it on my ends, only in my roots and after a while it gets that ashy tone, but on the roots it just stays orangy. My natural colour is dark blonde and I would like to go platinum as the picture. πŸ™‚ thanks!

Have you tried applying the purple shampoo directly to the roots and leaving it on? I get what you have on the roots, mine never lift as much and overlapping onto the already bleached hair a little makes it more obvious. The shampoo doesn't stick as well either as it's not quite damaged enough. So I apply the shampoo with a tint brush on to the roots so it's a lot darker purple and leave it for a while, then pull it through to the ends, lather and add more as I need it. That makes the roots far closer to the rest, though not totally platinum, close enough so it blends a lot more.

I have tried that 3 times now, but It does nothing on the roots...it just works on the lenght...thats how I got the ashy colour. so I think the roots must be too dark for that. I think I will try to bleach just the roots and orangy parts with 20 vol peroxide and then use the wella colour touch relights /80 to tone. I will use coconut oil to try not to damage it too much. If it doesnt come out good...maybe i'll try a bleach bath later on...do you know how long should i wait to do a bleach bath after bleaching? πŸ™‚

I would try a bleach bath now. If it doesn't lift enough, you can do another bleach bath in a week. If you bleach, you really need to wait a month.

I get that you've used the shampoo and that's how it got the lengths ashy, but have you done exactly what I said? Applying it like a dye to the roots only, with a tint brush, so it's not lathered and stays darker purple (which means bluer and so tones orange better). If you have done exactly that, then fair enough. If not, try it before bleach bathing.

I have tried exactly that yes, pure purple shampoo on dry hair, on the roots with a tint brush, and left it on for like 30 minutes on the roots and then about 10 min in the lenght. Do you think a blewch bath will lift the orange roots? As they are darker than the lenght I was thinking it might not lift to the same colour...  *stars*

Ok, it must be a lot more orange than it looks in the photo πŸ™‚ I didn't mean to push, but a lot of people say 'yes yes done that' when they haven't really read or taken in what was said to them.

A full bleach is likely to push the roots too far, meaning you'll have hot roots, which generally look worse than darker roots, and end up causing breakage where the more heavily  bleached (meaning dyed hair, blonde dyes are basically bleach) hair meets the less bleached hair. It's difficult to not overlap when you're doing it yourself. Better to do it slowly and carefully than rush in full gung-ho with something stronger than it needs to be. And as I say, do a full bleach and you really need to wait a month before you can do anything else, to make sure the damage isn't worse than it first appears. You have long hair, I imagine you'd really rather not have tufts of hair an inch or so long sticking up all over your head πŸ˜‰

I would possibly try toning for longer too. I tend to leave toner on for about an hour or so after bleaching, even topping it up on my roots about half way through.

Thank you! πŸ™‚ I've bleach it and then tone with the Wella Colour Touch Relights /18. I came out kinda ok, at least the orange is gone and now its a bit yellowish on the roots. However, after I dryed it, I've noticed that I've missed a spot and now I have a round dark circle on the top of my head! lol How do you suggest I correct this? Just bleach on the exact spot? Oh God, it looks horrendous!
