Hey, I've been colouring my hair red for the last year doing my roots with loreal majicontrast and using a semi crazy colour every time I wash my hair. Previously before this I was bleaching my hair for years which obviously caused a lot of damage that's why I went red in the first place, But I'm bored now and desperately want to go back blonde not bleach blonde but a ash or pearl blonde. I know red is one of the most hardest colours to remove and I really want to remove it with the least damage as possible I also really want to do it within a week if possible as I'm only holiday from work lol :-X I'm naturally dark brown and I've let my roots grow through for the last 6 weeks. Can anyone recommend a high lift pearl blonde colour also? Thanks! ;D
Use colour removers to get the red out, it is likely to be quite bonde underneath from the hi-lift red.
You are unlikely to get pearl blonde from dark brown hair with a dye, even a high lift one. You will get better results bleaching your regrowth and then toning. Wella Colour Fresh do lots of blonde shades, and are direct dyes so won't further damage your hair. You will need to bleach to the level above to get enough yellow out for a cool toned blonde. So if your goal is a level 8 ash blonde, you need to bleach to a level 9.
You can also make your own toners by mixing/diluting direct dyes, Pravana silver is a great shade on brassy hair for creating ash tones.
First of all, you need to forget the idea of doing it in a week if you want to consider your hair health.
Using majicontrast is almost no different to using bleach and your crazy colour. The good news is you've used the least "sticky" colours.
I would suggest using a remover like colour b4 or decolour and see what colour that takes you too, but big changes like this need to take weeks/months.
Thanks for replying! I've read a lot of mixed reviews about colour b4 but I'll give it a go first, have any of you ever used loreal dialight? My hairs only just started to be healthy again after using bleach, I'd really prefer not using bleach but I guess my only other option would be to go brown and get hilights every few months? I'll attach a couple pictures of the kind of colours I'm aiming for.
Hi there - I used to dye my hair exactly like that, Majicontrast on the roots (sometimes through the ends when I really shouldn't have...) with a veggie dye to top up. I love the fade from the magenta Majicontrast.
However, new job required hair colour change so I went to ash blonde then finally and so happily to silver grey. This took about six months but I was away for some of that -I am absolutely sure you could do this in a little less time. Most of the wait was for the bloody Colour B4 smell to die down...
I am aware this is probably not the way to do it, I'm only saying what I did based on a gathering of tips from this forum, friends and awareness of my own hair and what it can take. if you have very fragile hair then this might not be the technique for you. My ends look awful in these photos because I hadn't had it cut in around four years either (I travelled a lot with work), the rest of the hair however ended up really soft and as healthy as I felt it could be.
So, naturally dark brown, I had been peroxide blonde for two years before dying it red to go back to black and suddenly realising I loved it! I then used 12% with the Majicontrast in magenta for four years and Directions Poppy on the ends.
Used a crushed vitamin c tablet and conditioner concoction to remove most of the veggie dye then applied c
Colour B4 a few days later. First go, it left patches so I left it for a week (I still can't get over how much that stuff stinks... but it's magical) then did it again to get a bland blonde that was very brassy.
I used 'touch of silver shampoo' and conditioner to calm my hair down a bit then when ready, used the same technique as I'd always done, but this time with a majirel ash blonde (10.1). This sorted out my roots but again left my hair quite brassy. Separate toning wasn't doing the trick and I tried Bleach London's White Toner which did help but again was patchy.
What actually did it, was on a whim, applying Loreal Feria Excess in Purple Punk to the ends, which when it faded toned my hair perfectly! So naturally, whacked the whole lot on.
However, that was when I was on holiday and i needed it back to blonde by Monday. It was about four months since I last bleached so since it was 3 for 2, I used Bleach London's bleaching kit. Honestly, fantastic. Lifted my hair and the purple straight out and left as near to the mythical banana peel yellow as my hair can get.
This co-incided with Pravana silver being back in stock on this site, popped that on for two hours, (1:3 with white drugstore conditioner after doing a few strand tests as the tube colour is terrifying) and finally got my perfect ash blonde. The Pravana is brilliant, it doesn't fade out quickly and really stuck to my hair. Even my awful dead ends that veggie dyes normally run straight out of.
I continued with this for a few months, using Bleach London's (the final in my 3 for 2, bless you Boots...) silver shampoo which I really think is brilliant and far better than most salon brands I'd used and occasionally topping up the pravana with conditioner every few weeks.
Eventually, I decided to up the Pravana level and go to a proper silver grey. I utterly adored this colour and it was surprisingly easy to keep up. However, you could stay ash blonde with the Pravana easily too.
edited: I can't add photos as easily as I'd hoped, I code for a living and I'm being outdone by a forum! *ott*
