Here is a step by step of what I did and the products I used
ColourB4 (fashion colours)
I used the clarifier as directed, then blow dryed, and my hair looked like this
Then I applied the ColourB4 with a tint brush, wrapped my head in clingfilm, and left for an hour
It didn't look any different, but I followed the rinsing directions (rinsing for even longer than suggested), then blow dryed (there is about 2mm of dark roots where I had virgin hair)
After this, I left my hair for 2 weeks and used Joiko K-Pak reconstructor 3 times during the 2 weeks and used the Tresemme remoisture conditioners for 30 minute sessions. After 2 weeks, I went ahead with the first bleach.
I mixed Igora Vario Blonde with Truzone Creme Peroxide 30vol 9%, applied all over my hair, and left for an hour
And then washed thouroughly, left the conditioner on for 20 minutes, then rinsed and towel dried
I then mixed up more of the same bleach, applied all over my damp hair, and left for 20 minutes ( *stars* yes I should have left my hair to recover for a few weeks but I am impatient)
Then washed thouroughly
I left my hair for another 2 weeks, using various deep conditioner treatments and Joico reconstructor. Then my work decided that my hair wasn't a "natural" enough colour *ott*
So I put an ash brown Nice n' Easy box dye over it
After a few washes it faded to a strange gingery colour
So I put Feria beige blonde over it
And after a few days, I bleached again (same mixture as before) and left on for 30 minutes
Then deep conditioned
And rinsed
I then put an ash blonde box dye over it, as it was very patchy
After this I applied Wella T14 (very unevenly!), left on for an hour, and washed out with purple shampoo
Followed by Mellor and Russell simply bright silver hair dye, which I left on for 30 minutes
The results had a greenish tint, so I washed it regularly with purple shampoo and conditioner over the following 2 weeks, then repeated the silver hair dye
I decided at this point that I wanted my hair more white than silver, so I used Wella T18 with 20vol 6% developer and left on for 30 minutes
I then used Directions silver mixed with smartcolour Silver moon and left on for an hour
These are the results after I rinsed
After a week or so my hair became slightly peachy (even though I was washing with Clairol Shimmer Lights shampoo and conditioner) so I coated in the shimmer lights conditioner, and left for an hour
Then rinsed thouroughly
Then let it dry naturally
And these are the end results 😀 *loveeyes* *lovestars*
You need to be very, very careful with your hair from now on, as you have done nearly a year's worth of processing in the space of a month.
We recommend a minimum of one months between any permanent box dyes, bleaches or permanent toners.
Yeah definitely baby your hair and avoid any more bleaches, permanent dyes and I'd avoid heat styling for a while.
It's a very nice shade though!
Wow! I am surprised you still have hair lol! You managed to do 3 bleaches and 7 permanent dyes on already processed hair. It is a pity you didn't ask for advice part way through, you could have avoided so many of those processes and ended up with the same colour but with a lot less damage.
My thoughts were the same - surprised you've still got hair. I did enjoy the 'journey' and glad it didn't end up tragic. I'd just have to say, as Intemp suggests above, your method is probably not for everyone, as most people would have had to chop off most of their hair after going through what you did. So I'd say it's not really a recommended method for others to try.
Thanks so much for the pictures, it was interesting to see what you did. I, too, love the colour. :-*
I love it! I also like the more wheat blonde you got from the lightest ash blonde toner. I have some but I'm scared to use it! Do you think it's drastic?
Also, does leaving shimmer lights all over for an hour work well?
That is a big change but understandable why you wanted to get rid of the funky reds and oranges first. My hair was orange on top while converting a head of highlights with about two inches of regrowth or maybe more to full bleach blonde. It made me insane and I lasted five days before insisting on a second round of bleach which definitely weakened my hair considerably. Be very careful because one full bleach and a second round at the roots and in some of my lengths with a 20volume weakened my hair and my hair dresser said I have strong hair...so can't imagine how your hair is not completely damaged. Use lots of oil, get frequent trims.
I love the black hair also on you. Both the black and pale blonde are super edgy and cool but I am a die hard bleach addict right now and I love it!
I just have incredibly thick hair from my mum. It is pretty dry but I'm keeping it saturated with leave in oils and conditioners and doing regular deep conditioning treatments. I have cut about 2 inches off overall (mainly in the form of short layers and a choppy fringe) as well as shaving a strip down one side at my front hairline. Yes I agree that I WOULD NOT recommend this method for anyone else, as at least 3 hairdressers have looked at me like they don't believe I still have hair! I have been told that I'm lucky my hair isn't crispy and snapping off at the slightest touch!
Are permanent dyes and toners bad for your hair?
Yes, any product that uses peroxide is going to do some damage. Permanent box dyes, especially cheap ones and light blondes often have 40 vol peroxide in. It is a bit of a myth that box dyes are less damaging than bleach, they work the same way but often with a higher vol peroxide but less lift. So you get a less damaging result from using a lower vol peroxide with bleach, and more lift.
I enjoyed, and was a little scared for you, reading this! I'm so glad everything came out okay. I love the result and you seem to suit any color. You even look like the girl in the picture. Please be so so careful from now on 🙂 When I saw your pics of all those products I was like... 😮
I have also used the method of leaving purple shampoo on for a long time. Shimmer Lights doesn't seem to lather as well as One n Only Shiny Silver, so I usually use that for extended application, and the regular Shimmer Lights for just taking a shower with it.
It's really interesting to me to see other's toning processes. Personally, if I leave Wella T18 (or similar) on for longer than three and a half minutes, my hair will go green and gray. It looks like yours did go gray but it was pretty! It's not cute on me though.
UPDATE
So I have been regularly using Schwarzkopf Bonacure Colour Freeze shampoo, and this morning I did another Wella Color Charm T18 toner for 20 minutes with 20vol/6% peroxide:
These are the results in bad lighting when most of my hair is still damp (except my fringe):
And this is a picture I took at 7am this morning whilst walking my dog:
I have definitely abused my hair beyond belief over the past 3 months, but I am regularly using Joico K-Pak deep penetrating reconstructor treatment, Ion intense moisture mask, Ion conditioning miracle, Ion reconstructor treatment, Dark and lovely cholesterol cream mask, Palmers coconut oil protein mask, Virgin coconut oil, so I am hoping to save my hair (or at least some of it)! Most of my breakage was in the front right hairline, so I opted for a shaved side, which has already grown about 1/4 inch in 2 weeks. You can sort of see it in this picture:
I am planning on cutting my hair soon to this sort of style:
With this at the back:
Hopefully this will get rid of a lot of the damage, but does anyone have any other ideas in the mean time? *anyone*
All you can do is cut it off now. You have damaged your hair far too much to rescue it with products.
Honestley - nothing will save your hair now. nothing. No products, no matter how expensive or clever they are, will save it. It needs cut and not dyed for a long, long time!
This is honestly a scary journey to read , and I hope no-one else follows this method. You can literally see the damage progress in every picture. I'm surprised you havent had scalp issues or chemical burns.
I agree with Marthakins, its time to chop it all. And give up, IMO.The girls above are right - what you did takes most people approx a year to do safely with minimal damage.
All these products you think are helping, arent doing anything for your hair, its damaged way beyond belief and all its doing is scaffolding the damage temporarily - it'll never fix the problem, your hair will break even more so in the following weeks. We hear on this forum all the time how peoples hair felt thick/strong/used treatments... and then it all goes seriously wrong, as demonstrated here.
You've used a peroxide based toner against all the advice here, so I am unsure if you will listen to futher advice now.
I am sorry you have lost your hair, but at least you didn't burn your scalp, as that can lead to permanent hair loss. Your only option now is a very short cut, but it will grow back.
If anyone is reading this and wants to do a similar thing but safely keep these tips in mind:
1. You can use colour removers three times. They will take a lot of the old colour out, which makes bleaching much easier. Colour removers are not damaging.
2. Use the lowest volume bleach for the lowest time possible (always do a strand test) all bleach is damaging. Any product that lightens your hair is causing damage.
3. Leave at least a month in between processes that use peroxide. (Bleach, permanent dye, demi permanent dye, toners that use peroxide/developer, colour strippers) The only exception is a bleach bath, these can be done a week apart if the hair is is good enough condition. Use the month to reconstruct and deep condition your hair. Assess the condition before doing another process, if the hair is starting to show damage, stop processing and get a trim.
4. Hair that is pale yellow (the colour of inside a banana) can be toned to white/silver with non-damaging semi permanent dyes. The best way to do this is mix your own toners with blue/violet dye and conditioner. Hair that is brassy from early bleaching processes can also be toned to a more acceptable shade, just mix the toner to the strength required. Green tones red, blue tones orange, purple tones yellow.
I'm quite unsure why you used all the box dyes to cover up? Woudn't semi's be easier, even for a natural colour? Don't know, I thought Henna plus semi's were quite available, or the Wella ones?
