A few weeks ago i tried to go from faded plum to lilac, failing on my way and getting lovely -but unwanted- turquoise hair. Tried to tone it with pink, failed, and just put on plum back on. The results were....well, unexpected. My roots and almost 80% of the length turned BLACK!
So it went from this
To this
I've been using dandruff shampoo like crazy to take off as much of that unexpected black out and the results are just hilarious. I have some patches that are just my natural ginger color and the ends are a grey-ish blue (sorry for the dirty, dirty hair, dandruff shampoo makes my scalp go crazy)
i mean
come on
How stupid is this?
I want to go to the hairdresser on monday because i have way too much hair to use a color remover by myself without messing up, and i want to do it properly. I just want to get my ginger roots and white ends back, condition the hell out of them and then, maybe, give lilac-lavender another go.
Suggestions? Prayers? I don't know what to do or expect anymore *gun*
Are you certain it was actually Plum you used? Plum would only go black over a very orange base.
Bleaching it (if it really is Plum) will make it go turquoise as before, I would try other methods before going to the hairdresser. They are likely to either bleach or use a stripper. Colour removers are really easy to use, just mix the two bottles and slap it on, it is easier to spread than hair dye. Then rinse like crazy after the recommended time.
It was plum, or so said the bottle. I've kept it in a dark and dry place all this time so i discarded that maybe the dye had gone bad because of getting direct sunlight or whatever (though i share this house with 2 korean girls that are always messing up my stuff and i was gone for about 3 months because of family issues, maybe they moved it around? i don't even want to think they did).
The black does have kind of a purple tinge to it but, what the hell, it's still black and plum is NOT that dark, and my hair was a very pale yellow (inside banana yellow) so it doesn't make any sense. It also looked as usual inside the bottle so...i don't even know. It got really pissed off, as you can tell by my endless rambling.
Those kind of products are really difficult to find in Spain, that's why i thought of going to a hairdresser instead. I'll try asking around and see if i can find something, if not i can totally deal with turquoise hair after bleaching. I just can't stand black, it makes me look really sick because i'm really pale with neutral skin undertones (which means my skin is just white-grey, totally dead looking).
Do you know what removers would be best? I've searched for color B4 here and there's no way to find it (unless i order it on the internet as i've done before) and i can't really wait 1 week to start this whole process...
They all work pretty well, although they are much more effective on permanent/demi permanent dyes than true semis, on semis they can be hit and miss.
You could do a strand test with bleach powder and shampoo to see if that will lift it. I don't know if bleach powder alone will turn Plum green, or if it needs peroxide to do that. You could try bleaching a strand too, if it goes red/orange you will know it wasn't Plum.

I could go for both as i've just trimmed my hair a little and saved some rather long bits to test with. As it's a semi maybe it could not work as well, ad you said, but it's worth a try i guess. Maybe the bleach powder+shampoo will lift it better? We'll see...
If it turns orange i'll be so mad i won't even know what to do. That'd mean that either they messed up a whole batch of plum or that my roomates did something to it, like moving it around exposing it to heat and/or sunlight....*sigh*
Exposing it to heat or sunlight won't turn a dye darker, it degrades the pigment. I left some stargazer Violet in the window and it went grey and almost transparent. I really don't think that is Plum. What colour was it in the tub?
It sounds and looks like it wasn't plum, or it was partially plum and black. I would test strand a bleach bath, you'll be able to tell if it's straight plum or not, so then you can decide where to go from there, because if it's not plum, the color will be very different

As i washed it the water was the exact same as when i had washed plum before, so i didn't see the black coming at all...

Man oh man, what do i do if it turns out it was black or black mixed with plum? Should i e-mail La Riche? I'm doing all the strand tests tomorrow and will update with the results....hopefully ???
Double posting sorry for that.
Ok, so after using a colour remover 3 times, it took ALL the black out of my hair (which was really exciting, i literally danced all around the house because i thought i'd be impossible).
This is the remover i used, btw
So i was left with my crazy long ginger roots and a lovely pastel turquoise color all over the lengths.
I hated the idea of doing a bleach bath to lighten my roots because at this point my hair felt really dry and waiting for 1 week to damage my hair again did not seem like a good idea to me. This is the best picture i could take, you get an idea of the base i had to work with
So...i decided to use 2 pots of plum that a my best friend sent to me (she always uses violet and got those by mistake). I diluted half of the first one and mixed some pink in it, since i had a green-ish tint on most of the hair. First take was kind of successful. Kind of. All the turquoise became a really beautiful purple shade with some blue highlights (YES that's what i was totally looking for) but the roots were really brassy. I thought to myself: "oh well, i should just put pure plum over them. I don't mind it becomes really dark as long as it's purple". And so i did.
As soon as i get to rinse this plum off my roots i'll post a picture of the result. If it's still slightly brassy...well, i have a lot of plum and pink to play with.

That's an amazing result from the colour removers!
Crossing fingers that your roots will be nice and purple. 🙂
It must have been the old plum formula because it came out quite pink in some parts, but still really cute.
Just in time for a mermaid photoshoot i have today, phew....!!!

I know right? They were so cheap that i didn't really expect any color changes but oh girl was i wrong...
It's turned out gorgeous :D. I think the other one may have gone black because the new plum is very blue, so the blue mixed with the ginger and went a dark brown/black.
I didn't know Nirvel made a color remover too! How awesome! I'm liking that brand more and more everyday! lol. (Their grey is beautiful). This is such a great result from the color remover, and I love how the plum turned out! So pretty!

If it had only been on ginger roots i would agree, but it went black over hair that was previously bright purple as seen in the first pic, and didn't fade more purple, which implies something very off with the dye imo.
Really glad you got back to a nice purple though, it looks lovely.

I agree, don't want to point fingers at anyone or anything, but it sounds like maybe one of your roommates may have gotten curious while you were away and tried out some of your dye. Maybe she couldn't get another Directions Plum for some reason so just filled the rest of the tub up with whatever she had/could get ahold of, probably some black dye, could have been something like the Rainbow Research Henna Persian Black Conditioner/Dye (acts more like a semi as opposed to henna) , so maybe you wouldn't notice a difference in the tub. Totally hypothetical! But it's just really weird how it turned out on you at first

It turned almost 80% of my hair black, even on the super bright turquoise-white parts...couldn't be because of my ginger roots :'( But yeah i'm really glad the shade is exactly what i wanted!!

Thanks! It's also fading beautifully, now it's more obviously purple, if that makes any sense!

Ooooh man, one of my roomates used henna to make her hair stronger (she had really weak hair and no volume at all) so it could've been that...Maybe she mixed it with the leftover plum, because it still looked like regular plum to me (looked almost black but had a slight purple tinge when exposed to direct light and stained purple). Makes sense, because i spent a fortnight out (before dying my hair to spend a weekend out again) and both of them seemed pretty nervous and didn't want to be around me that much...they moved out all of a sudden so that makes me suspect even more.
ANYWAYS *sigh* Nirvel did an awesome job. Like, i was seriously disappointed in the first try but the second time i used the remover it took pretty much all the black out. I used it a 3rd time just to make sure i wouldn't dye over black or really dark base and it was totally worth it!
The texture was a bit awkward (it's like a gel that makes a bit of foam when rubbed into you hair) and the smell was not pleasant at all but wow.
