Hey everyone!
I'm totally new to the hair dyeing world and am pretty clueless. I've been wanting to try out dyeing my hair a copper red but hadn't really worked up the guts to commit to something permanent without knowing how red would look on me. So, my friend last week used a demipermanent dye to take my hair from a medium brown (my natural virgin color) to a slightly darker brown with hints of red in it. Needless to say, the hints of red convinced me that I was definitely eager to go all the way!
The demipermenant dye is supposed to last ~28 shampoos, but I haven't been using any special shampoo for color-treated hair, since I'm not super concerned with getting this color to stay. In fact, I'm getting a bit impatient; I really actually want to do the permanent copper now. Anyway, even though it's only been a week, the color has faded considerably, but is still there.
My question is, can I use a 30 V developer and L'Oreal HiColor in copper on the slightly-faded demipermanent color, or do I have to just wait out the 28 shampoos before dyeing it again? I know you can't lighten color with color, but would the developer maybe make this possible?
I would recommend you use a color remover ( such as color B4 or decolor remover) before using any dye, that way, you will get a better color. Otherwise, the brown might not completely come out and leave you with a dark reddish brown instead of the copper.
It is also best to wait at least 4-6 weeks ( since you last dyed) before using any products with peroxide ( developer) in them, especially 30 vol as its quite strong peroxide and can really damage your hair.
If you decide to use the remover first, please remember to condition well after as it can dry the hair and to wait at least one week before using any peroxide products.
So just to clarify, if I use a color remover, I don't have to wait the 4-6 weeks you recommended between dyeing and using developer? I would be safe to use developer after a week? Or are you suggesting that I wait 4-6 weeks, use a color remover, and then wait another week? Because I'm not sure a color remover would be necessary for a demipermanent dye after 4-6 weeks, since the color is supposed to wash out on its own after about that long anyway?
Demi-permanent dyes never fully wash out. The colour may fade enough to look like your natural colour, but it is still in your hair. Any dye that uses peroxide permanently alters your hair.
So a colour remover would definitely be my advice too.
Ah okay. That makes sense. Thank you!
As for timings, you want a week of washing after the colour remover and also some time to get some moisture back in before using another chemical process.
To preserve the integrity of your hair it is best to wait a month between chemical dyes.
