How to know if your hair is in good enough condition to bleach?

Hi everyone,

So my hair is currently dyed a level 4 brown, my natural is a level 5. Two years ago, my hair was bleached to a ginger/blonde colour and dyed using Directions. It was highlighted about a year and a half ago to lighten my base colour. It was damaged so I had it dyed a level 4 brown with a bleached pink stripe. It's been like that for about 15 months now, I have only topped up the brown once using Casting Creme gloss and I maintain the pink stripe as normal. My hair has grown from shoulder length to mid back in the past 2 years.

I feel in need of a change though. Ideally I'd like to try bleaching with the aim of having violet purple hair (SPX Deep Purple or similar). I'm worried though as the condition of my hair is not great. As I'm growing it I haven't been getting many trims and the ends are split. I also have those white dots (imcomplete splits?) on some strands. My hair generally lifts with bleach very quickly (roots about 10mins with 30vol) but as my hair is fine and straight, it is quite fragile.

So summary of my hair:
Natural roots, level 5 brown
Faded dyed ends (over a previous bleach job) level 6 brown
Bleached stripe, dyed crazy colour cyclamin
Split ends, thin hair
Mid back length
Lifts quickly with 30vol

So I suppose I'm asking what is the best way to go about bleaching my hair to limit damage. Is it wise to be thinking of bleaching my hair or is it too risky given the length and the damage at the ends?

Thank you  *thx* *cheers*

Try washing your hair with a clarifying shampoo, no conditioner and letting it air dry. You can then get an idea of the true condition of your hair. It's a good idea to get all the split ends cut off too as they'll only split more with bleach and travel up the shaft of the hair.

Also, forgot to mention in the original: my hair does not retain the pink colour as well as it used to  πŸ™

what used to last 3 weeks, now lasts a week or so. I have not changed any products and i wash my hair less often than before. Is that another sign of damage?

I'm starting to think I'm just not suited to bright colours, my hair won't cooperate! -r-

I would try the clarifying shampoo trick. I tried clarifying shampoo and my hair was SO dry. Gross.

It sounds like your hair has been through a lot, personally I would be afraid to bleach it. Maybe go to a professional and ask.

There almost certainly is no need to bleach the ends.

You want to start with colour removers. You can do that three times. Once you've done that you'll know what you've got to work with. Permanent dyes do actually also lighten hair a little, so even anything that has been only dyed brown will be a little lighter than natural.

At that point, post a photo on here and we can advise you of the next step.

Also, do the clarifying shampoo thing as mentioned above.

I wouldn't suggest asking a professional the vast majority of the time. Unless you have a very trusted colourist you've used many times then it's not worth it. Too many don't understand bleach or alt colours well.

You are correct though, hair not holding colour is one sign hair is damaged. There are ways around it though!
