Hey lovelies.
My hair is usually pretty good at taking bleach without too much damage or going patchy, but this time round it's got a lovely great big streak of black that I can't seem to get out.
I was box dye black for ages, removed as much of it as possible with B4 and bleach baths and went a really lovely deep red with Directions Pillarbox, and I could live with the black bit because it wasn't really that noticeable with the red because I did my ends lighter so it looked sort of like an intentional ombre. I adored this red, but it faded pretty quickly despite looking after it well. π (Sorry for the mega posey photo, I'd just come out of the hairdressers and felt sassy. hahaha)
So over the course of a few months I've been intentionally fading it, lots of Head and Shoulders and Lush's I Love Juicy, which took out a LOT and I've also done two bleachings in that time (used coconut oil first which helped so much- miracle!) and now I'm left with a very bright ginger with yellow blonde ends, but the black bit is still there. π We even concentrated the bleach on it last time and wrapped it separately, I guess I'm just destined to have it until it grows out?
Basically my questions are: would using a colour remover help at all at this stage? I mean I must still have some colour left in there, or would it not be worth it for the drying damage?
Also, I have several pots of Directions Violet and Neon Blue which I would love to use, but would I have to go really blonde in order to use them? I'd rather not bleach again. Would they go sludgey, or just dark? I don't mind dark, just not sludge. I also have Tulip lying around, but I was hoping to go more purple than pink this time. π
Thank you <3
Definitely try another colour remover on the black part. Make sure the hair is clean and clarified, and keep it covered and warm once the mixture is on. Often colour removers work better after bleach has opened the cuticle, but always go for a remover over bleach where permanent dyes are involved, they are less damaging as well as more effective.
On my hair both Violet and Neon Blue need a really light base. I mixed the two once and it was very grey and sludgey on any areas that weren't a level 10 blonde, and the darkest parts of my hair are only a level 8/9 blonde, so they won't be great if there is any orange or gold left in your base. If they cover initially, you will get an ugly fade.
You could mix them with some pink to make a warmer toned purple which will be much more forgiving on a darker base.
Thank you! <3
Yeah that's what I figured re the violet. If I mixed in some tulip, that might help?
Should I wash with a clarifying shampoo and then fully dry it and then use the colour remover? So completely free of conditioner?

Yep π
Thank you! π I picked up some colour remover today, so I'll do it tomorrow night and report back. Fingers crossed!
(Totally OT but where did you get your glasses from? I want some just like those!)

They're the bees knees, aren't they? I've had other designer ones but I always go back to these. They're from London Retro, you can get them from Glasses Direct. π
Ta!!
So I used the Scott Cornwall colour remover last night, rather than the colour B4, just purely out of interest of the difference between the two, and wowza! It removed any trace of red that was still there and definitely lightened up the dark patch. It's still darkish, but not black anymore. π
I'm now at this, which I am pretty pleased with! Would toning do anything to it?
It would depend on what colour you want to tone it to. Any colour can be toned with the right products.
Can I tone down the brassy tones to be more ashy with either a blue or purple diluted dye in conditioner?
Absolutely, blue tones orange and purple tones yellow. If you already have Neon blue it makes a great base for toning as it is a purple based blue
Excellent! Thank you. π
Just thought I'd update you.
I bit the bullet and did a final bleach bath, with coconut oil, and it lifted beautifully and used Joico K-pak afterwards and my hair felt super soft. I mixed 2:1 Directions Violet with Neon Blue (and a dab of tulip for sh*ts and giggles to see what would happen) and bucket load of conditioner. Slapped it all on, left for 5 hours and this is what I ended up with. It's a bit patchy in places, due to having a lot of hair and not being very dexterous, but I am overall pretty pleased. π
Thanks for everyone's advice. <3
That looks great!
