Hi all,
It's been a while since I posted, I've been dyeing my hair dark brown for AAAAGES now, to fit in at my office. However, I couldn't stand it any longer and this weekend I bleached my hair out and put a nice darkish red on. I love the colour throughout my hair - apart from the roots!
I figure I didnt start far enough down when first applying the bleach, and after the bleach I had white-yellow roots, fading to a dark gingery blonde at the ends. So I now have bright red roots fading gradually to the darker red about an inch/inch and a half down.
What do you think the best way to fix this would be? I've been considering getting a dark blonde colour and applying it just to the roots, then going back over with red - but I don't know if I'll end up with a worse mismatch afterwards? My other ideas were to bleach bath the darker bits to make the difference a little less noticeable, or to run some darker streaks through to break up the bright red.
Oh, and I'm not going to destroy my hair like last time. Definitely going to wait a month before using anything else apart from Joico and Coconut Oil like mad!
Any and all suggestions would be appreciated!
To get your roots to match your lengths, I would use a dark gingery blonde semi on your roots, like something from Adore. It's hard to say exactly which color to get without a photo of your bleached gingery blonde color, but some diluted Adore Ginger, French Cognac or Cajun Spice may work. You can see swatches and examples in the BU shop/gallery and in the showoff section too. I would dilute it though with conditioner to make a sort of toner with it and strand test it first on a small piece of your roots to make sure you like it first.
When you're wanting to lighten hair that has permanent dye on it, it's best to start with a color remover, just for future reference in case you ever want to change colors again or brighten your red. So if you'd rather try to lighten your lengths instead, use a color remover or two like One n Only Colorfix, Colour B4, Decolour Remover, Color Oops, etc. This will remove your permanent dyes and your hair will probably be lighter than it was when you bleached it. It can take 2-3 applications though if you have a lot of dye buildup. They aren't damaging, just drying (you have to rinse for a long time afterwards) so be sure to rehydrate your hair afterwards. From there you may still need to do a bleach bath on your ends, though they probably won't get as light as your roots did because using dark dyes for a long time can permanently stain the hair, usually some shade of ginger. It definitely will make the difference less noticeable though, especially if you use a good semi over it, they have much better coverage than permanent dyes.
Whichever route you choose though, I would stick with semis like the ones sold here π
