I've been dreaming of having mint green hair for a few months now and I've been doing my best to lighten my hair doing it as healthy as possible. I'm trying to figure out the next step as I've done a lot to my hair over the past few years which unfortunately has left my hair damaged.
Late 2012/September 2013: This is where I pretty much damaged my hair after deciding that I was sick of my black (dye) hair and decided to bleach/tone the hell out of it using Loreal Super Blue bleach kit which was I used during the entire period to do root-touch ups. This left my hair the shade below and to the shade I would love to reach again.
Late September 2013/Early April 2014: My hair was dyed black while sectioning off large chunks of hair to use Ion Color Brilliance in Aqua on the bleached hair. This resulted in the following hair.
Late April 2014: This is when I became obsessed with wanting to go "bright cherry red" like I had a few years back. My co-worker recommended Loreal Hi-Lites for dark hair and that is what I went with and... it did nothing at all but damage my hair and make my hair color uneven. Then I went and did Loreal Color Oops on my blue hair in order to get the blue out of my hair and it did absolutely nothing. The only way I was going to get my hair looking normal again and cover the blue was going to be to dye it all black. To do this I used a semi-permanent black hair dye so it would continue to fade over time to make it easier to go blonde. During this time I also went to the salon to get a much needed hair cut, and also did a deep conditioning treatment. My hair was healthier after. The hair dresser instructed me to wait until my hair was healthier before starting to go blonde again.
Which brings us to present day: I've been wanting to get my hair pastel mint green which means I have to go back to pale blonde again. Instead of full out bleaching, I did a bleach bath on my hair and this lifted my hair somewhat but not a lot. I've been using a deep conditioning repair mask in replace of normal conditioner on washing days and it felt pretty healthy.
Then I waited two more weeks and did another bleach bath which lightened my hair even more (my roots are really light now) but I still have a long way to go. Pictures are below of what my current hair looks like after two bleach baths using 30 developer. The second bleach bath was more damaging, I could tell my hair was more frizzy in the back than the first one but that went away. I've been using my deep conditioning repair masque in replacement for my regular conditioning as well to improve condition.
I'm not even sure what shade/level to call my current hair right now (above). You can also see the very orangey/red tones in it. It has been over 2 weeks since the last bleach bath and I'm not sure if I should continue with it or do something else. Any help would be appreciated and if you read through this entire long post.... *thx*
Have you used a colour remover?
The only color remover I've tried was Loreal Color Oops on my blue strands. I was considering doing it on my full head but I wasn't sure if I should or not. 🙁
You definitely should, colour removers are made to take permanent pigment out and are always better than heading straight for bleach. It could make a huge difference to the colour and will save you from a lot of bleach damage if they work well.

Thank you. Any color remover (ex. loreal color oops) will work for that?
That will work, but the best one I think is decolour remover if you can get hold of that. You can use colour removers up to three times before they won't work any more, and it's usually worth doing it all three times 🙂
I think color oops is a US brand, and I've heard that colorfix is the best US branded remover.
just want to jump in-- im in the us, and ive tried color oops since it was easiest for me to get (i havent ever seen colorfix anywhere, actually.). i was surprised, but it worked very well for me to remove a permanent color, and it only took one shot. be warned, it smells terrible!
Color Oops works better for some people, One n Only Colorfix works better for others. I've always had great success using Colorfix removing my black. You'lll probably want to do at least 2 applications which you should be able to get out of one box, just only mix up the amount you need at a time. You mix equal parts step 1 + step 2, apply it to clarified, product/conditioner/oil free hair as quickly but thoroughly as you can and put a cap over it. Warming it up with a dryer for 10 minutes and every so often throughout can help too if your hair is more resistant. You can leave it on for longer than the instructions say and still get more results from it, but anything more than an hour is pointless. Be sure to rinse really, really well after. Rinse for a half hour, dry it completely, then use the step 3 on a test strand to make sure it doesn't darken. Really that's the only thing the step 3 is good for, I'd just chuck it after making sure your hair doesn't darken. All it is is hydrogen peroxide (which will darken it if you haven't rinsed enough, that's why it gets so many bad reviews), silicones, and an acid.
Let us know how the color removers go!
