Dark to blonde

Hello everyone πŸ™‚

I have waist-length dark brown hair (not quite virgin, I have some barely visible highlights from last year) and I'm absolutely bored with it. I never let my hair down anyway so the length doesn't do much for me as I always keep all of my hair in a ponytail.

I have an appointment at my local hairdresser's on Friday since I have to get about 4 inches cut off anyway, and now I've been thinking about finally fulfilling my life-long dream of going blonde *lovestars*

I'm really afraid my hair is going to snap off though. I assume I'll have to go there 2 or 3 times anyway and my hairdresser is very professional and has tons of experience... But it would be such a shame since my hair is so long and thick and healthy ???

Has anyone of you bleached long dark hair to blonde? Or had it done at a salon? Did you get chewing gum hair? My only experience with bleach is virtually invisible balayage (had it done 3 times, hair feels super healthy) with 6% bleach at a salon. And, well, one box dye experiment πŸ˜€ I bleached my ends twice in a row to dip dye them green. They were light brown and felt like straw but they didn't fall off or anything so that's good news, right?

Awful picture attatched, edited because weird facial expression. But that's my hair right now. Darker in natural light and maybe 2 inches longer.

When lightening hair there will always be some degree of damage as you are physically removing part of the hairs structure.
With the right products and aftercare your hair can still feel healthy though, bleach does not automatically mean crispy fried hair that snaps off.

Thank you! I've just been reading all these horror stories on the internet about not being able to comb your hair, hair falling out whenever you touch it etc... Sounds awful.

The secret is to use a quality bleach with a low vol peroxide, and take your time. Rushing the process by using strong products and double/triple processing is going to cause damage. Bleach damage is permanent and cumulative, so avoiding it is key.
Also bear in mind that you cannot treat bleached hair the same as virgin hair, it is more fragile and will not tolerate rough handling, heat styling etc.
