Well here I am again, I have two questions and you guys have the best advice I just love this site, and yes i am very annoying ahah sorry ;D
1- I was wondering, do you guys use conditioner or mask to dilute hair dye ? i see a lot of people talking about using conditioner but if it closes hair cuticles wouldn't it be wiser to use hair mask ? or is it just a matter or it being cheaper ?
2- Also I did my roots very few times (because im so paranoid i'll go bald so this time my boyfriend is going to help so at least I can blame him if it happens ahah)
After bleaching them (using coconut oil first of course), you wash your hair, apply toner and then what ?
put some dye over it right after or do a keratin treatment before it ? does anyone have any tips ?
I was thinking about using novex keratin, it seems like a final step to me
Not sure if you have done this yet, but there's nothing wrong with using conditioner to dilute your direct dyes. Any cuticle closing action isn't enough to impact the dye since it sits mostly on the exterior of the hair anyway. The only exception would be a silicone-heavy conditioner as it could prevent some of the dye from adhering properly. As for roots, I bleach mine, rinse, wash out well with shampoo, then use a good conditioner. I never dye straightaway, I always wait a day (or two if I'm being lazy) and I don't bother to tone as I don't do pastels or anything that would need a really even white base. If you are doing a keratin treatment, I'd use it after the bleaching but before a toner and/ or dyeing; it should help even out your color by giving it more to 'grab on' to.
We use conditioner as it is basically what direct dyes are made out of.
I'm not sure what difference you think there is between conditioner and hair masks? Do you mean protein based ones? I have used a protein mask to dilute dye with, it was great for newly bleached roots.
Oh yees I have, I usually like darker blues so I just use it straight out of the tub though, Thank youuu both it was really clarifying :))
Sorry if it sounded dumb tho, I was really curious;
I did something similar to that actually, I already did my palm sized roots and it was a disaster I'm walking around with a bun all day every day, all because the bleaching powder was terrible ): worst bleaching powder ever, i had to rinse and do another light round of it because no dye would cover that patchy brownish and blonde mess, plus half of my hair was seriously darker (I know it was a horrible thing to do but I kinda had no other option, just happy it's not snapping off)
I'm thinking of going for it again in the end of the month, although scared, been doing lot's of coconut oil treatments/masks/keratin/no heat ): hope my hair doesn't melt off
But thanks for the help!
how i do my roots 1. coconut oil at least 8 hours in advance 2. bleach 35 minutes 20 vol per (start timing after all roots are applied) 3. rinse then shampoo sometimes 2x 4. tone with 20 volume peroxide and wella t28 to cut the brass. process about 20 minutes. I have very dark hair so it's still a little brassy but then I use purple conditioner. I would prefer to break up the bleach and toner over two days but i do it all in one night since i already have the whole bathroom setup. my scalp does feel a bit tight the next day.
Double processing (ie using an oxidative toner or permanent dye straight after bleaching) is potentially dangerous and not something we recommend on this forum. Your hair and scalp are at their most vulnerable directly after bleaching.
Didn't know that toner needed peroxide, I personally tried to do my own with directions and conditioner and that did not go well, guess i'll skip that part ahah
And yeah it does seem best to do it over the weekend or something, just to give it a rest,
Thanks for sharing :))
I use Touch of Silver to wash the bleach out, it tones my roots at the same time but still leaves them ready to accept dye.
