Hello,
I'm 32 and have about 12 years experience dying my dark brown, naturally curly hair.
My dilemma is that I really want to do the "Oil Slick" hair where you dye just the bottom half of the hair purple/blue/magenta/teal. I've done similar dye jobs on friend's hair, so I have the ability, but my hair is so dark and I don't know if there's a brand of bright dye I can achieve these results with without bleaching it.
I take really good care of my hair to keep it healthy, but I let a professional bleach it once, years ago, and learned the hard way that the bleach changes the texture of curly hair! My hair was straight and frizzy until it grew out and I could cut it short and start fresh, and that's something I'm not willing to do again.
Is there a brand of bleach that won't change the texture? Or a brand of (preferably permanent) dye that's hi lift in bright colors? I know Loreal makes HiColor reds, but I'm looking for those other brights... Would using a higher volume developer work? Or I "color removed" my hair in the past without messing up the curls, but I don't know if having that orange-y base it leaves would really work.
I asked my stylist, who specializes in curly hair, but unfortunately she doesn't do much dying. :/
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
There's lots of ways. I have curly hair and my hair retains the curl. It used to be affected more, but I now add olaplex to my bleach and my curls are as curly as they've ever been, apart from a few areas where it's heavily damaged through using straighteners (because of a bad hair cut).
For that oil slick look, you don't have to have very light hair. It can even be fairly dark. But if you want it to show up will, it will have to be towards the lighter side, but it can still be brown.
Ok, so I think probably the best way would be to try a strand test of a bleach bath. It will depend how resistant your hair is, so try that. Adding olaplex will help with the curl. This will also be a lot less damaging than a high lift dye, they're really almost as bad as bleach as they're doing exactly the same as bleach. I blame you tube for giving people the idea it's so much better!
However, when you say about colour removing? That means your hair is dyed now? If so, stop thinking about bleach. Use the colour remover first. You can always use a bleach bath to then lift it a little more if need be. That orange base isn't too bad of a base, but something a bit more neutral is better. Blue is always going to go more teal on a darker base though, I suspect it'll fade badly too, but seeing as I never see a follow up fade on a blue done on darker hair in these oil slicks I can't be sure.
Regarding colours to use and the base colour, this is my oil slick peekaboo faded, it's directions violet and directions alpine green over dyed brown (Wella Koleston 5/4, so a warm, gingery brown) hair (the colour that the rest of my hair is on the photo, the roots are lighter so ignore them π ) The bluer bits are a mix of the two colours.
My hair isn't curly, but I have noticed the bit with Directions on dries a bit straighter than the rest - I put it down to it conditioning it more and giving it extra weight -it wouldn't be noticeable if you had directions on the ends of all your hair though I don't think.
Thank y'all so much for the advice!
Lauralei13: My hair is pretty fine (even though I have a ton of it), so the Directions possibly weighting it down is something to consider. I'll look into it. π Loved seeing your oil slick, especially after some fading, and seeing that it still looks great!
Janineb: I'll definitely do whatever I try to just a strand first, and I'm looking into Olaplex. π It looks like I can order it if I can't find it locally. Do you just add a certain amount to your bleach/dye, or use it as a separate treatment? If I dye remove it, would you recommend then doing a bleach bath (I think I saw a post on here spelling out how to do a mild bleach bath) to get it at least wheat/blondish toned before adding color? Or will doing that after dye remove just add damage or not counter the orange? Do you have a favorite brand of dye remove, bleach, or bright dye? I was looking at Ion semi-perm brights, but I don't know if any brand makes perm brights that can be ordered without a license. I know a good amount about applying dye and mixing colors for desired shade, but unfortunately very little on the science of it or brands.
Thank you again for any advice!

Thanks Cabaret Kitten - looking forward to seeing yours!
