Am I Overreacting?

I went to a new hairstylist who had great reviews. Unfortunately, it did not turn out so well.  First, she did not listen to what I wanted to have done.  The first request was to color my roots a lighter color to match the rest of my hair, but she ended up dying them the same color as my natural hair color  ::).  Second, I asked for bangs and she laughed at me and said bangs were for children.  I persisted and she cut a tiny portion of my hair to my chin. Third, I told her I did not want any layers and she cut layers.

Now I'm not the one to complain.  In fact, I still tipped her the standard 20% because she did take the time to work on my hair. I try to live with my decisions and deal with mistakes.  What I saw when I was leaving the salon was something I could live with.  I can cut my own bangs, the layers in the back were long, and she put in a lot of highlights on top to mask the roots that were still there. When I got home and started cutting my own bangs though, I noticed a lot of banding.  I have no idea how there are dark vertical stripes in my hair, but they are there.  I couldn't handle it so I called the manager the next day that the salon was open.

The owner has been very accommodating and will be staying open late this Thursday to do a consult and fix my hair if necessary.  I'm just wondering though, is it really that bad or am I overreacting? Would you have complained? How do they fix banding? I don't want to stress my hair too much.

Last picture to show the banding.

In my honest opinion, they have done a really bad job. You are definitely not over-reacting.
When you pay for a service, you should get what you want, regardless of the stylists personal views.
If you ask for bangs and no layers, that is what you should get. It is normal to try and talk clients out of bad decisions (because they don't have the right hair type or skill level for the upkeep etc)but they should discuss options with you, not impose their own views against your wishes.
It is good that you are going back and allowing them to fix it

You're not over-reacting at all, that just isn't very well done and whilst it's probably preferable for them to advise if they think something you're asking for is a bad idea for your hair type there is no way they should then go ahead and refuse to do something you've requested (unless it's a really bad idea and they don't want to be associated with it, in which case they should just refuse the job, not just go ahead and do their own thing!). Hopefully the manager will fix it for you, but I certainly wouldn't go to that same stylist again!

Definitely NOT over-reacting.  I cannot believe she allowed you to walk out of the salon not only with the banding but the HEAVY line of demarcation near the top.  They are going to have to break the base and throw in some highlights to mask that banding.  There is no fixing it.

Thanks! I just hope my hair doesn't get fried tomorrow! The positive is that it still feels healthy considering it just got colored. I was looking at the cut and noticed some hair in the back of my head that was cut about an inch and a half shorter than hair in the front (and it wasn't a top layer).  Gah....I feel like she hated me or something. Why would someone do this bad of a job?

It's weird isn't it? The haircut I got that made me resort to cutting my own hair for the past year (yep, it was that bad!) was from a girl I'd been to twice before who'd been really good and had really good reviews and word of mouth rep, but for some reason she decided this one time that thinning the ends out to look whispier meant cutting all my hair about 3 inches shorter than usual then leaving 4 random, very thin, long strands around my head - very strange! I guess we all have bad days but sometimes it's hard to see how they manage to do everything about it wrong!

I hope you manage to get it sorted anyway, let us know how you get on!

I hope all goes well for you and really the stylist should have said or done something while you were still at the salon. I'm sure everyone on here has gotten a bad cut or color and it really does ruin the whole salon experience, its so sad. I worked in a salon for awhile doing massage and I had a couple of regulars that used to get a chair massage before or after their cut and because the stylist screwed up there hair so bad it made ME lose clients!! I ended up leaving a month later because the girls were just terrible!!!

Just wanted to echo what others have said - you are certainly not overreacting. It can be really hard to be assertive but I hope you can be and the hairdresser makes it up to you.

OMG did you get this fixed?
Shocking and I'd be sooooo mad.
Seriously some hairdressers need a good slap and do as they want at our hairs expense
Hope you got it sorted xxx
