Hi Guys.
Over a month ago, i went to the salon and asked for ballayage highlights.
here are the facts:
1) i have natural dark brown hair
2) i dyed my hair dark brown 4 weeks prior to getting the highlights (i don't know why i did this lol)
3) the highlights did not come out as i wanted them. first of all the lady basically gave me an ombre -__-
4) the lifting process surprisingly lifted a lot of the dark pigments from my hair, but the lady did not use an ash toned color like i had asked her..so my end result was very coppery, reddish, and just...super brassy. i hated it.
5)the next day i went to another salon who was able to tone it down to a neutral tone of light/medium brown.
cut to one month later, my highlights/ombre was looking a bit busted. i bought loreal preference color in light ash brown and used it 2 nights ago, it did wonders on my hair. not only did it cover up most of the brassy ness, but it also blended some of the bright parts of my hair, and now it looks like i have a wonderful mix of different ashy shades of brown all throughout my hair (except my roots are dark brown/black, i didn't put the color on my roots). i love it. i've never been this happy immediately right after coloring my hair (i always have a 1 week sulk period)
i know in a couple weeks the color will oxidize more and the real results will show. eventually it will all fade, and i will have to redye my hair, but my ends are seriously so messed up. i don't want more damage on my hair by redying, and i don't want to pay someone 3 times more money to tone my hair when i can do it myself...so i've been looking into wella color charm toners, to use with a 10 volume developer, to only deposit color or tone.
i wanted to know from anyone here, which would be the best shade to use? upon doing my research i found 050 grey something from wella...the name escapes me...but mostly i see that with people wanting to dye their hair grey..but if i use it over my highlights and slightly lightened rest of hair, will it make my hair grey? will it deposit the perfect amount of ash tones? is there something else i could use? any advice/feedback is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
L.A
We don't use permanents and demis very much on this forum ... it would help to have a picture of when your hair was reddish and what it is now so we can advise what colours to add to recreate the look.
Those wella toners aren't going to do much of anything to your hair. The pigment in them is so light, they're like pastels + really only work on lighter blonde hair. Imagine your color on a piece of paper, and putting a pastel blue or violet over it - it's not going to make it look any different.
The healthiest way to tone is using semis diluted in conditioner or shampoo, though most of us use conditioner. Semis aren't damaging at all, you can control how light or dark you need it for it to tone, you can add some of that dye to your normal shampoo/conditioner to keep it from fading, it's just the best way to tone/keep hair toned all around. Do you have a photo of what it looks like now and a photo of what it looks like when it's brassy, like before you used the last dye? The color semis to use can really vary depending on if your hair was more red/orange/ orange-gold, etc. If you hair is too red, make a light green toner, of it's too orange, make a blue toner, if it's too gold use violet. Or if it's in between like red-orange, mix green and blue for example.
