Hey lovelies I haven't posted for ages, I've been lurking and been through the usual cycle of pink, green, ginger, brown and back again. At the moment I'm using pinkissimo by crazy colour, diluted a lot. I like it because it's kind of a cool pink so doesn't fade out too salmony. It look even cooler in daylight, see bottom pic. Other two are indoors with some artificial light which warms the pink up an bit. It's on a pale blonde base with warm tones and a slight green tint in some places!
Anyway as all pastel fans know, it washes out after 2-3 washes, mine goes a kind of patchy pinky blonde. With some mint green bits that emerge (green never leaves, huh?). I was mixing my dye with conditioner but getting patchy results and making a right mess. And I was going through SO MUCH conditioner. I don't know if I was doing it wrong but I tried a different method tonight and got great results. This might have been shared already, sorry if so!
After washing my hair, I just got a large bowl (mixing bowl from kitchen) and mixed a small amount of dye with warm water and dipped my hair into it while I was in the shower. I used a beaker to pour some of the pink water over the back and sides of my head. It was really quick and easy. I didn't even have to leave my hair in the water long- about 10 seconds before I saw it take. I got a nice even result without having to cake my head in conditioner, which is great for me as I don't like having it on my scalp - my hair gets greasy if I condition anything but the ends.
I have really porous hair so it might not work so well on people with healthier/stubborn hair! And obviously your base has to be light enough too. 🙂

That looks lovely! And thank you for sharing this technique. Did you *just* do it? I'm wondering if dying it this way affects the fade time.

Yep Pastina this is the first time I've done it this way so I'll see how it holds up! To be honest I've been washing my hair as if it's not dyed these past few weeks, I've just been too hot with the weather to resist it! It would probably fade slower if I only used conditioner to wash/ sls free shampoos/ only wash once a week etc.

It looks great, i have used water to dilute too.
If you want a pastel to last longer, switch to a better brand. I use Special Effects heavily diluted (with conditioner though) and it lasts for months on me. I added multi coloured pastel streaks in mid April, and the SFX Deep Purple/Blue Velvet streaks are still going strong now (a full 3 months later) despite force fading with dandruff shampoo 3 or 4 times
If you can get hold of Virgin Rose it dilutes to a beautiful cool toned pastel pink.

We have always used a clear direct dye to dilute the more intense colors into pastels.

Definitely a way of doing it, but a LOT more expensive 🙂

Thanks Wicked Pixie! If I decide to stick with this shade I'll definitely invest in a better brand. At the moment I don't mind it washing out so fast as I'm terrible for changing my mind after a month, so I kind of like the flexibility of paler shades.

Thanks for sharing, I'm going to try this tomorrow. I also don't like putting conditioner on/near my scalp for the same reason.
