Hey, I just had a few questions.
1: Why are you not supposed to condition the hair when rinsing out the bleach?
2: I don't know if this is true or not but, I read that you aren't supposed to leave bleach in for more than 40 minutes.  Is it ok to leave it in for an hour?
3: Can you leave non-vegatable based dyes in for a few hours?

Thanks!

Answers:

1: If you add conditioner to your hair after bleaching and before dyeing the dye won't stick. Conditioner leaves a protective "film" over your hair which stops the dye from penetrating. Without conditioner the cuticles of your hair are wide open, allowing the pigment from the dye to enter.

2: NO! Don't ever leave bleach in for longer than the recommended time. Check every pack of bleach for development time as each brand is different. Bleaching opens the cuticles to your hair, leaving it weak. The longer it's left on there the weaker your hair gets. Leaving it on too long will make your hair brittle or (even worse in my book) stretchy! You won't be able to repair the damage afterwards and will end up getting your hair cut to take out the damage. Each bleach has a strength (30, 40 etc) which is a guide to the developing time so what is the right time for some may not be for others. If you need to bleach your hair a lot please use a bleach bath, it's time consuming but ultimately less damaging.

3: Again, read the packet. I would never leave a non veggie hair dye in for a long time as some of them contain peroxide (bleach) which shouldn't be left in too long for the reasons stated above. You may be able to get away with a few minutes (up to 10) longer than the stated time but I wouldn't push it further than that.

Hope that answers your questions.  ;D

Thanks!  I was pretty sure that the conditioner did something to that extent.  I am doing my hair today so I will post pics when I'm done! :)

Perhaps you needed to use a toner to get it white. There might have been some residual colour left in the hair that tainted the dye. Either that or over bleaching opened the hair cuticles too much and the colour didn't stick. There's a few reasons this could happen CyberPunk. I hope you have your hair the way you wanted it now though.

i MAY have left it on a tad bit too long, and i was bleaching it from black...
Ill try again (my hairs black again but partially shaved so there's less hair to cover:)
Oh and i did use a toner, but it didnt seem to do anything. :/ but ive now got some Shimmer Lights shampoo from America, thats supposed to take the yellow out!
Whats the best bleach to use? i first used Stargazer, and then some drugstore brand bleach... volume 30.

Thank you!

Schwarzkopf XXL Ice blonde works a treat on me. It made my dark auburn a very pale yellow when I first dyed my dreads pink.

Getting black out of your hair is a pain in the butt, especially if you used a permanent dye but maybe the Ice Blonde will work, only one way to find out! :)

Thanks! ill try that one, i saw that before but thought it was just a hair dye not a bleach! And tell me about it! i think ill stick to semi permanent for now on!  ;) I always seem to dye it back to black, then immediately regret it when i want it pink or something!

Oh! and do you think a pre lightener would help, if i applied it before the bleach, or would it be better after?? (it says you can do both)  :)

Hmm... with black it's so hard to say. XXL Ice Blonde is quite mild but if it doesn't work as well as you expect then you'll have to wait a while before using it, or another bleach again. If it were me I'd go for the XXL option, see what happens and then if it's not light enough try non bleach ideas like colour b4 or anti dandruff shampoo's. If you really can't stand the colour it goes if the XXL doesn't do so well then think about dying it a middle range veggie based colour for a while to let your hair recover from the processing it's had.

Yep, red will be fine, especially if you used an orange based red. If you check here you'll find some colours that fade to orange so they'll cover well.
