FAQ: Which Semi-Permanent Dyes work on Dark Hair?
« on: 30 Nov 09 / 10:38 PM »
This is a commonly asked question but one where there is no definite answer.  The dye results not only depend on the base colour but also on the porosity and condition of the hair among other things, and what may work perfectly on one person may do nothing much to someone else's similar coloured hair.  We always suggest you try a strand test to check the results before using any of these dyes especially if you are using these on darker hair shades.

As a rough guide the darker or deeper the shade the more chance it will show up on darker hair for example using a pastel colour like Cupcake Pink over dark brown hair is unlikely to make any difference, whereas using Deep Purple over dark brown hair may give a purple sheen or tint to the hair.  For the best chance of a neon or bright result you are advised to use these dyes on bleached or pale coloured hair.

For more specific answers or to ask about an individual dye colour please post in the main forum

Deep purple Goes plummy on my natural hair and does give a putple shine to my dark brown dyed hair (basically where I accedentally get it on bits I have not bleached!). But its dyed dark brown so the hair will be more porpus that naturally dark brown hair I should imagine

I once applied Atomic Pink on someone with dark brown hair who was terrified of the idea of bleaching her hair.

It came out exactly the same shade as ribena.
It looked like she'd dipped her head into a big vat of ribena.

She was very pleased with it!

I quite like the idea of ribena coloured hair, I might try this once my extensions come out, until my hair is fit enough for bleaching again.  :)

Ive been thinking of giving my hair a rest from bleaching after Ive used up my 3 tubs of Directions reds prob in about 6mths time.
My natural hair is similar to this shade

Would it work if I used a dark purple like Directions Plum over my faded red and natural roots, and kept using it without bleaching roots to give a break from the bleach,I dont mind if the colours not too even.
My hovercraft is full of eels !

It absolutely positively works! I did this and the rest from box dyes/bleach did my hair the world of good. I never touched a box dye or bleach in 6months. I dyed my hair red and was dying it Rose Red with mixtures of other reds added in for 4months. I used to dye then wait until the colour had faded of my natural roots (it never faded off my length as I had box dyed my hair red as a base for Directions) and then I'd redye with the veggie dyes again. Then when I ran out of reds I decided to get rid of the Directions Plums in my hairdye stash and once the red had faded from my roots I fired it straight on top of the red and kept doing that until I bleached the top layer for blue.

It fades from your natural hair colour faster than the hair that's been dyed but otherwise it works without fail and stays pretty even coloured since Plum starts out dark and forgiving of damaged hair.

I've been using Directions Ebony to try and even up my hair between the frazzled bleached bits and the rest which is naturally very dark brown, and I'm starting to find that the roots are always much browner than the rest and I have to leave it on for aaages. Which is ridiculous since it's black, you would've thought black could dye anything!
I was going to ask about this, but it seems this post explains it.
I will probably have to break out the bleach bath (gently).
I don't care if it's true
