Hair Dye Forum Tips
« on: 07 Nov 11 / 08:25 PM »
Hey everyone,
I've been asked to do a more in depth video of one I have already done, called tips for living with dyed red hair.

This is my youtube channel.
http://www.youtube.com/user/ScarletSaintOnline?feature=mhee

I'm no hair dye expert, but I know there is a lot of collective knowledge here! So in some sections of the next film I'd love to do sections with tips from you guys! I will put this web address on screen and also include your user names and profile pictures if thats okay with you?

Okay, so anyone interested in taking part....

Please throw all your best tips and tricks for red hair this way!
Everything from maintaining it to removing dye stains. Anything you'd be happy to share.

Thanks everyone!
Take care

Maintaining:  Put veggie dye in your conditioner to top up the colour every time you use it.  It will keep any colour bright for a long time, as you're constantly redepositing the molecules you've just washed out.  Reds have quite big colour molecules and wash out very quickly, so this is extra important for redheads.

Do a vinegar rinse to keep the dye from rubbing off on your face/hands/pillow etc. as much as possible.

dont use heat on your hair and wash in as cold as you can stand water.

Avoid anti-dandruff shampoo's at all costs.

I either heard somewhere, or did it myself (Really bad memory. ._.) but somehow I have this idea that nail polish remover helps getting rid of dye stains.

^^^ Yes, it does.  And bleach for when the acetone just won't cut it.

For your skin, hand gel.  I can't remember who on this forum suggested it, but it's an absolute life saver.  A little bit on a tissue or cotton ball cleans the dye stains right off of your hands/face/neck.

Sounds obvious but when you go somewhere really sunny, wear a hat, the sun fades red hair quickly:)

I have long brown hair with only one teensy patch of gray - on top and in the front, of course - but my natural brown is kind of blah so I color a little darker.

My colorist uses something she calls "demi" color - it is not permanent, and normally I have it touched up every 6 to 8 weeks. That might be the easiest way to transition back to natural because it washes out gradually.

When I go too long before re-coloring, I wear my hair pulled back and kind of "slick" - this hides a multitude of sins! People think it is fancy when really it is a desperate attempt not to look scary! Might be a good strategy for you in the meantime (see photo).

I will be 49 soon and have been 99% raw (I count spices and nutritional yeast in the 1% non-raw) for almost a year, and I notice my gray is diminishing - the teensy patch is getting even smaller!

Here it is. Hope you like it. The video goes on for ages so I didn't include everything. And it was all a bit rushed as I'm getting rid of the red soon, so i wasnt really very prepared for it as you can tell haha

But thank you all so much. I'm a doofus when it comes to hair but I get sent questions all the time xD at least now they have some advice from people who know what they are talking about hehe :)

(Your part starts around 4:27)
