Blue hair. Need help!
« on: 31 Dec 18 / 09:02 PM »
Hi! Ok, first of all - I am a COMPLETE hair-noob so forgive me if I say anything obviously stupid :) I'm a 28 year old male with long medium-brown hair and I've never dyed before, ever. Long story short I want to dye a strand on the front medium/bright-blue and if it works out nicely, perhaps later turn it all blue. I understand that bright unnatural colors can fade quickly and need regular maintenance and re-dyes etc. My question is - is it absolutely necessary to bleach my hair first? I would prefer to avoid that if possible but I have tried applying semi-permanent blue to both dry and wet hair for anywhere between 15-60 minutes and it literally has zero effect. It washes out 100% and I'm left as brown as ever. I know bleaching is the way to go for bright vivid colors but I figured even unbleached it might leave at least a slight tint - but it literally washes out entirely with NO effect. I'm clearly doing something wrong. Could someone more enlightened let me know the whole deal, what should I do?

Well, you've got your answer already really. You tried it and it did nothing. To have an effect, it has to 1, be a darker colour than the hair it's going on (so a dark purple will work in the sense it will look black but with a hint of purple in the sun, but a medium blue won't show at all on medium brown) and 2, can't be totally on the opposite side of the colour wheel. Blue is on the opposite side to brown as it's made up of yellow and orange/red. Red will show on brown because it's in the same colour family AND usually darker, but if it's paler than the brown it will still do little to the colour.

You do have to bleach, especially for blue. Also, it needs to be very pale with most of the yellow gone (partly thorugh toning) or you will get turquoise (though turquoise is more flattering than blue in general, so it's not all bad!) or green.

Hopefully that makes sense, feel free to ask any other questions and we'll try to help :)

Yes totally agreed with Janineb - You do have to bleach, especially for blue. Also, it needs to be very pale with most of the yellow gone (partly through toning) or you will get turquoise (though turquoise is more flattering than blue in general, so it's not all bad!) or green.
