Experiences with Adore (and henna) on grey hair?
« on: 20 Jul 18 / 10:53 AM »
I want to whine, please.  *waves*

I used to have really nice hair, a very dark brown with a slightly reddish tinge. In the past, I used a dye or henna from time to time, for fun.

Then I started to go grey, early. I'd always liked grey hair so it didn't bother me and out of principle, I didn't want to dye my grey hair. Until I moved to a country where it makes a huge difference with regard to how you are seen and treated (seen as brain-dead or not, seriously). I gave in and started dying my hair again and it made a big difference.

Then I became allergic to regular hair dyes, including the less risky ones. I have used blue etc which is great fun but not suitable for all circumstances. I am not 100% grey but that in-between stage that is not attractive in any way (and that may even make my hair look yellowish, that salt-and-pepper effect).

 *ott*

I tried walnut shells for a while and that actually worked pretty well. It did not color my hair in an obvious way but took the edge off, made me look less grey, somehow. (It stains, as you'll also find out if you use a light-colored towel.) But you have to use it weekly to make it work, so you have to stock up on walnuts when they're available. I let it  go after a while.

After having been grey for ages, I gave in again and purchased some Henné color, which I have not used before but someone else was using it and it looked great on her, in photos, so I asked her what she used to color her hair with.

In the past, I used to have to leave henna (Lush and before that, the BodyShop) in for many hours (8 or more) and usually leave it in overnight to get a good result. I always ended up with an itchy scalp, not due to allergy, but just from having had my hair wrapped in goo and plastic so long.

Henna tends to be so messy! I am also a little bit concerned that I may not like the result as I have a lot more grey now and it may look odd relative to my skin. I know I can do strand test and simply use the hair that is on my brush. Also, I bought two different tones, so if one works out not too well, then the other color will likely compensate for that.

As I was typing this, I realized that it is the henna messiness that I am mostly dreading.  *1* *cat* On some site, I read the tip that it's best to prepare the henna mix two days in advance. (That might solve part of my problem.)

Then I browsed around on Beeunique  *bee*, whose products I have used before, and discovered the brand-new Adore range... I am highly tempted, but the descriptions and photos don't give me enough to go on yet.

Has anyone tried it?  *anyone*

I have personally used a couple of the Adore dyes - mainly red/pink shades and love them!  After Special Effects they are my second favourite brand! I have grey at the side of my head - am at that age where most of my hair medium brown with these very obvious white patches at the side, and adore covered them no problem.

Overall on the website they are our 4th best selling brand - after the three main longer lasting ones (Special Effects, Manic Panic and Pravana), so the best selling of the 'budget' shorter lasting brands

Are you in the UK?  If so what shade of colour were you looking for? I can check if we have any Adore in our damages section and post one to you free of charge (if we have any).  Damages are usually slightly bent out of shape, cracked or have been leaked on by another dye and we don't like to send out products like that, but would be ideal if you want to try a new brand to you for free.

I’m sure you’re aware of this, but do a patch test on your skin before using any dyes. Just to rule out any allergies :)

Hi Niccki,

Thanks for that. Yes, I am in the UK and I was looking for a reddish or brownish colour (like Mahogany or Mocha, maybe).

(Btw, I especially love African violet, too. Looks gorgeous! And Indigo of course. But that's not what I am looking for right now. I used to order Special Effects Blue Mayhem from you, and a reddish/burgundy one, and I've also used a few colours from Directions in the past, which I bought locally.)
