How to apply silicone hair serums evenly?
« on: 13 Jun 16 / 06:26 AM »
I've tried many silicone based hair serums and I really love how soft they make my hair.

My only issue is I seem to apply it unevenly. Some parts of my hair get drenched in it while other parts are neglected.  I need to use a new technique for application and if you guys have any advice I'd love to hear.

Persojally, I wouldn't use one. Oils do the same and are far better for your hair. I'm not against silicone, but I don't think serums are great. Anyway...

It depends on the result you want and what your hair is like. Straight, curly, wavy? One of the best methods is doing sections and holding your hands on either side like you're praying. Then smooth down from top to bottom. Do that over small sections of hair with a tiny amount each time and you should cover everything. As I say though, it depends on your hair. This is a method I would never use as i wear my hair in my natural curls and smoothing it down like this would break my curl pattern, for other people with curls, this is the best way. It really depends on your hair. Doing it this way might even deposit too much of the serum if you wear your hair straight. I guess what I'm saying is, we need more information to be able to really answer :)

Just as a generalised tip I find with any product if I rub it into my hands like hand cream, a little bit at a time (on the palms, the backs and between the fingers ) then run my hands through my hair that helps it distribute more evenly. I've known people who swear by putting a dollop of it into their hand, whooshing a bit blusher or powder brush over it and applying it to their hair with the brush too, but I think that only works if you are using it on the top layer of straightened hair.

I agree, I use a leave in conditioner almost everyday,  and the best way I have found it to get it all over is to use my hands and usually the heat from your hands helps emulsify the serum so that it is more pliable and it will more evenly coat your hair. Same goes for my face serum!

I rub between hands, tip my head upside down and kind of scrunch it across the ends, then run my hands through mid-lengths all over and then through the whole length of hair. That way I get most of it on the ends where it needs to be and a minimal amount on the roots.

Im not a fan of most oils for my hair  :( so Ill stick to the silicones.

Thank you everyone. Im going to try dividing my hair into sections and using your advice about warming it up in my palms. It feels so soft but i hate the uneven parts. Haha. I shall report back!

The uneven parts might just be how your hair is, sadly. I have parts of my hair where it's very fine and others where it a bit coarser and it affects how soft it feels.
