How to remove pink tones from ashy platinum hair?
« on: 22 Oct 15 / 09:52 PM »
Hey guys! A friend pointed me toward this forum to see if any of you lovelies had any suggestions for me and my situation. So long story short, this is what I'm trying to achieve:

And here's what I'm currently working with:

My phone camera really didn't pick it up too well, but obviously because I'm trying to get the red out of my hair and make certain sections blonde, and the red I used had a pink base as opposed to orange, I have slight residual pink tones in my platinum sections. I would just say "screw it" and dye the rest of my hair black and hope the pink eventually fades, but I'm afraid the black would only make the pink tones more noticeable. For the platinum sections, I've already bleached them 3 times with 30 vol. developer, then toned them twice with Wella T18; once correctly, and the other time incorrectly but only left the toner on for like 5 minutes (I applied the toner to dry hair instead of wet, and mixed it 1 part toner 1 part 20 vol. developer as opposed to 1 part toner 2 parts developer...I had a total brain fart LOL). I've also used Shimmer Lights purple shampoo about twice.

So I don't know what the best course to take would be. Definitely not bleach because it's already light enough (I tried to make it more warm blonde like the reference picture but I guess I bleached too much), and toner doesn't seem to be doing anything to remove the pink anymore, unless I'm using the wrong toner. Should I use a color stripper like Color Oops? Should I get a more warm blonde toner and apply that? Should I just keep washing with Shimmer Lights and see if it washes out? Any help/suggestions would be MUCH appreciated! :D

Green tones pink. You want a green dye diluted very heavily in conditioner. Test on a strand to see how much you need. As it also appears to be pulling towards orange too, I would use a blue based green. Be careful not to get it on your roots though. Getting warm toned might be hard though. Someone else might have a better idea.

But for heavens sake, stay away from peroxide!

Okay, that makes sense! Do you have any dye recommendations, or would something from like Manic Panic work? Also I'm just curious, assuming I use something like Manic Panic, wouldn't it just wash out and not really end up cancelling the pink tones since it's just a dye diluted with conditioner?

I don't have a specific colour recommendation, but a manic panic one would be fine.

Yes, it'll wash out. You just do it again when it does. :) If your hair is very damaged (which is very likely, sorry) it'll probably wash out quite quickly. It's a LOT better than constantly using toners with peroxide that also wash out, just take a bit longer. You'd rather keep the hair you have rather than it breaking off, right? ;)

What is even more likely though, is the red will continue to leech a little each time you wash and carry on slightly staining the blonde part.

Oh, and I forgot, you could try the colour remover, but as I said in my last sentence, it's likely to keep happening. Switching to conditioner only washing would help a lot.
