Have you ever cut your long hair short?
« on: 12 Feb 15 / 02:37 PM »
Hello there, I am just curious to ask about other people´s experiences with cutting their long hair into a shorter style - has anyone done that and either loved it or hated it?
I have almost waist length hair and I´ve had it forever - its part of my identity now and everyone tells me that if I ever got it cut then I would regret it.  Even if I have to get my split ends chopped off at the hairdresser then I feel naked!  However, because my hair is so long, it can often look really flat and lifeless and just hangs there and I sometimes toy with the idea of cutting it.  I am also nearing the age of 40 and I keep thinking that I can´t grow old gracefully with ´witchy´ hair like this!
I just wondered how other hair-loving people had felt after going for the chop?  Did it give you a new lease of life, or did you immediately start growing you hair long again? And what kind of style did you have your hair cut into?  I see some lovely pixie crops and shaggy bobs around, but I think that it would be such a shock to my system after having long hair for all my life!

I had my past bra strap hair cut into a concave/graduated Bob when I was about 17. I loved it at first but ended up hating it & really regretting it. Sometime now though I get the urge to give my hair the chop again but always remind myself of how I felt when I was 17. My friend on the other hand had waist length hair & she had it cut just past shoulder length & loved it so much she went for a really short cut like Frankie from the Saturdays. Another of my friends had hair to her bum & also got it cut just below the shoulders & loved it & has kept it the same length ever since.

I think it all really depends, I got mine cut quite spare of the moment, my friends had it on their minds for a good while. I just wouldn't go super short straight away.

I had my almost waist length hair cut off to a short choppy bob thing when I was around 15 and have never regretted it. I loved my short hair instantly.

I have had shoulder length cuts a few times, always hated it. I don't feel right unless my hair has enough length to swing. Shorter hair just makes me sad.
I do get fed up of my hair and worry it makes me look like a witch or an old hippy about every three or four years or so. (I am well past 40 now)
I have learnt now that cutting the length isn't the solution for me, adding layers, a fringe, and changing the shape of it (as well as the colour obviously!) solves this issue.
So I would try that first. Even just adding some face framing layers and going a shade or so lighter can make long hair far less aging.
I think some people are naturally 'long haired' and others 'short haired', so if you have never had short hair you may find out you really love it and were really a short haired person all along lol.

A few times I've had my long hair chopped from waist to shoulder-length because I got fed up of looking after it.  There was one time they had to cut a foot off it before they could get it all in the sink, then still cut more off after it was washed!  That was a good one  :D
Last time it was nearer chin length and I quickly hated it - I've been letting it grow out since then (maybe 3-4 years now?) with occasional trims.  It's now about waist length I reckon.  The big difference is I now have an undercut which vastly reduces the amount of hair I have and allows my head to cool itself (which it couldn't do before so I was getting migraines at work).  So my short hair desires are fulfilled by my undercut, but I still have long hair when I feel like it  :)

I went through a phase of very short hair when I was young, started growing it back when I moved up to high school.

If you've never ever had short hair, try it.  You never know if you like something until you've tried it, and if you hate it well, hair grows back.  ;)

Thank you, it is quite curly naturally so i spend a lot of time trying to flatten and tame it, it looks like a load of mattress stuffing first thing in the morning lol.
Your hair is really pretty, and you could go practically any colour with that as a starting point.

When I've had long hair, it's always been extensions (usually either dreads or braids), as my own hair just doesn't seem to want to grow past a certain length (around shoulder length, maybe a little below).  Ironically enough, I feel more like 'me' with long hair, even though I have to use hair that's not my own to achieve it!  I've shaved it all off in the past, and at the age of 19/20, I felt really comfortable with a shaved head, so kept that style for a while, but now that I'm approaching 40, I feel more comfortable with long hair, and specifically, long dreadlocks.  I've had dreads quite a few times already, and have always ended up cutting them out (usually on the spur of the moment - the last time was shaving a sidecut into both sides of my hair, which I loved for about a week, then regretted, and then had to take out my dreads because I wanted it all to grow in evenly), and every time I've cut them out, I've regretted it.  I'm having dreads put back in my hair in a few weeks time, in March, and I have promised myself that I'm not going to do anything rash that I'll regret (like the sidecuts) and will keep them this time!
I guess what I'm trying to say is that you have to experiment a little to find out what's most comfortable for you, and that can change as you get older.  Basically, if you don't try it, you'll never know, and hey, it's hair - it grows back!  But I agree with what others have said above - if you're not sure, maybe go for a mid-length cut to ease yourself in at first, then see how you get on and whether or not you want to take it a bit shorter still.

Last time i cut my hair short I was in the 7th grade. I cut it to my chin. Lord I looked so ugly. The next time i would cut it was when I was 20, to an inch past my collarbone. Also regretted that.

Then most of it fell out (got really sick). I looked realllly ugly then.

And now its back to waist length. I probably *need* a little bit of a cut. But my long hair is the only thing that makes me feel pretty lol. So it's staying long and i don't think ill ever have an urge to cut it again.

IF I could pull off short hair though... I'd do it in a heartbeat. Everyone says the styling for short hair is so much more work but i think that really depends on the cut itself. The big PRO of having short hair = less product needed. I currently need about 3 bottles of dye just to get my hair covered. It adds up quickly. Ugh. And conditioner goes quickly so I have to stick to drugstore. Also everytime i shower, I have a mini freak out at how much hair is in the drain...but it's actually not that much. Having long hair just makes it look like so much more lol.

As for witchy hair - you'll be fine as long as it's not scraggly. LOL

Went from waist length to a chelsea cut with long asymmetrical bangs and everyone hated it except me. I got called a lot of offensive names but I still liked the cut. I used to always grow my hair out then chop it off really short once I got sick of sitting on my hair an getting it shut in doors lol. Shorter styles are a lot of fun and I'm always tempted to cut my hair when I see someone with a cool short hair cut... but I don't feel like going through the awkward grow out phase. I never maintain my short cuts, my hair just grows too fast to make it economically feasible for me.

When I was 8 my waist length hair got cut into a bob, then a few months later I got the back and sides shaved. I loved it! I just remember wanting all my hair off.
When I was 13 I decided to grow it again, neatly 10 years later I now have hair past my bum and going down to mid thigh. I love it now too! And I can do so many fun hairstyles too.

Basically ignore people, do what you want. Keep it long and YouTube New hairstyles, but some colour in, hair accesories, or even cut a different style.

I went from hair that was just passed my shoulders, to a kind of crop with a longer fringe when I was a teen. I loved it and didn't regret it at all. One day I'm going to go super short again

When I was a kid my mum always kept my hair short. I could wear it to my collarbones when I was about 10-12, then past my shoulders around 14 and by 16-17 I just started to let it grow because I have always loved long hair and I've had bra strap/waist length since then.
As much as I love long hair, I'm often complaining about it. It never keeps volume, doesn't curl easily, and I do think it takes nothing for long, straight hair to look very messy... so I often cut a couple of inches away. I'm talking about inches because the mid-length hairstyles I had back in my teenage years often were the result of a haircut I always ended up regretting. It took me years to find a hairdresser who actually listens to me and does as I say, I used to enter their studios to cut just a bit and have 10cm taken off -and when you want your hair long, 10cm feels like 50! At a certain point when I was 19 I started to study some basic cutting techniques and started cutting my own hair, and I still do it unless I want some layers or things that might be hard to do on myself.

Lately, I've been thinking I want to cut my hair shoulder length. I haven't had that length in many years, but as I've wrote I've always regretted those bold cuts I got in the past, so I'm still not sure about what to do. All my friends tell me I am crazy and I should keep it long but I just don't know. That length is just so popular these days that I guess fashion magazines are kind of brainwashing me into wanting it on me as well...

Yeah, from below the butt to my shoulders when I was like 20 or 21 - huge mistake. Instant regret, my hair is impossible to manage at that point and I cba styling it. I still can't seem to grow it back to where I want because my hair gets small cuts pretty often.

I had waist length hair all my life, until I was 15. (I'm 18 now :p) It was undyed with no layers. While I loved my hair, I used to always look at choppy layered dyed hair which had lots of volume. I always thought to myself if my hair was shorter and I didn't like my natural hair so much I would change it. People always told me I should never cut my hair. It started when my friend said I'd suit shorter hair. At the time I thought I would never cut my hair. Then one day I put on my jacket and my hair got tucked underneath it and it looked like I had a bob, and I instantly wanted to cut my hair. I cut it that same day (not into a bob) but into a chest length layered do. I was super happy but after a few months I started getting bored, but I never regretted cutting my hair. I then got a long choppy asymmetrical haircut which I still have now and I love it so much! I never miss my old hair, and I feel more like myself with this hair. Because I had spend so long growing my hair I was always hesitant to change it, but now that I have, I have a lot more freedom with my hair.

I had hair I could sit on as a kid but one day my mum got fed up and went mad with the scissors and I had a boy cut, I loved and hated it at times.

I grew it back by the time I was 18 but it was such a pain to maintain, it tangled and needed straightening so it was just tied up a lot. In the end I cut it to a mohawk and I've completely loved it. I still have it now 5 years later, its much better condition because it gets cut a lot more often so its not bleached over so much and I don't think I've ever noticed a split end.

I very rarely stick up the mohawk so its like a floppy kinda pixie style most of the time. Occasionally I see some chick with long hair and I'm jealous and long for feminine flowing locks... but that quickly passes and I'm thinking of getting some clip in extensions for those times.

I had brain surgery so didn't get much choice about the hair cut! They only shaved where the actual cut was, but when it grew back it stuck up through the rest of my hair like a little Mohawk, and then half my hair fell out from stress and grew back very fuzzy. So, I chopped it all off, from just past my shoulders to a pixie cut. I really like it; it's SO much easier to deal with (my hair is very thick) and last summer was lovely!

I've felt good and not so good about each of my two shoulder-length haircuts respectively, but I really want to try going short (bob or lob style). There is a lot of pressure to stay long but I have an inkling I may be a short-hair person. I'm very small and get a bit drowned in all this long, thick hair.

I still have urges to shave my whole head  :D  I feel like I'd probably love it for a while but then hate it for the next 5 years as I grow it out!!
Then I have opposite days where I want to grow out my undercut and have a full head of thick hair again, but again it would take years.  Years of sweat and migraines.  Blergh.

I usually let me hair grow down to my waist (trimming it occasionally) then ever 2/3 years or so just get it bobbed. I quite like cycling through the lengths, been doing it for years

I actually thought about going short several times, but I guess I share the same fear as a lot of people: I'm afraid I'll get tired of it in two seconds, I'm afraid I'll feel less "me".
The shortest I've had my hair was shoulder length, a couple of years ago, and the longest was below waist length.. I can honestly say that really long hair is not for me (my hair tangles like crazy, especially around my neck, and I'm quite small in stature) , so I settled for the in-between :D
Now I have hair cut below my shoulders (ends on my chest, pretty much), and all even.what I do is every now and then I get sick of it and add in layers, or a fringe and then ave fun letting it grow :p oh, and crazy colors help getting rid of boring hair too :D

I used to have waist length hair and I cut it to above shoulder length. Took a while to get used to it and i did regret it for a few weeks but after that i really started to like it and i've kept it between shoulder and bra length now as its much more manageable. I have tonnes of hair and very thick so used to spend a lot on shampoo and serums.

i had waist length hair for most of my life.  Then I went ahead and cut it at an extreme a line going from the nape of my neck in the back to about an inch above my collar bone in the front. I also dyed it from blond to fire engine/Russian red.  From there I kept it for about 4 months till the red was more of a copper. Then I shaved one side of it which I LOVED and kept for about half a year before shaving the other side.  This one was o.k. except that I didn't have enough hair to play with.  Since then i began regrowing it out because I have a fascination with braids, and short hair isn't super easy to create braids with.

Essentially I have decided that there are benefits and costs to both long and short hair.

I got a pixie cut when my hair was relatively long and kept it short for awhile, then grew it back and decided to shave it all off.  I currently have a bob as I had to cut a lot of damaged off.
