Will a colour stripper remove henna?
« on: 29 Oct 14 / 09:48 AM »
Good morning!   *1*

I have (mid-darkish) brown hair that has been treated a few times in the past with Lush henna.  I want to bleach and dip-dye it.
Of course I'll do a strand test before bleaching but it just occurred to me to ask if colour strippers like colour oops etc would have any effect on the henna?  It's been ages since I last did it so most of it's probably faded off now anyway.

Worth a try?  Or should I just go straight to bleach?

I have my doubts it would do anything, but I'd try it still :)

I have a friend who asked me the exact same question, so I am very interested to see if it does work.

A friend of mine tried a color remover and she couldn't see any difference. She then removed henna using mineral oil (if you google it you'll find the way it is done... I don't think it's that safe for the hair but still) but she first tried the color remover because she had read that it worked for some people, so I guess you can try :)

I think I'll just try one or two fading methods with stuff I have in the house .......
I've got;
Coconut oil
Jojoba oil
T-Gel shampoo (brutal stuff!)
Tresemme clarifying shampoo
Some rather old head & shoulders
Bicarbonate of soda
Lemon juice
Honey
Vinegar

Can probably cobble something together out of that lot  :D

..... not sure what mineral oil is tbh, is it the same as baby oil?  Think I saw some the other day.

Mineral oil is liquid paraffin, aka paraffinum liquidum. It is commonly used in baby oil and skin oils.

Really?!  I've got paraffin in the garage, I use it as fire poi fuel ... tbh I can't think it would be that good for hair/skin?  I don't like the smell that much either.  (unless I'm mixing up my liquid paraffins)

Think I'll go with oil and a good scrub with clarifying shampoo.

I think the mineral oil is different from the fuel lol but they come from the same source. The stuff you have is kerosene, you definitely don't want to put that on your hair!!!

Yes it should be baby oil. But I've read you should soak your hair in alcohol before applying the oil, that's why I don't think it's that safe. I mean, it might as well remove the henna - it strips the kind of coating henna makes on the hair - but I would expect it to be crazy dry, even though you put oil next. I don't know...
