Bleaching in Pregnancy. Yay or Nay.

Evenin' all.

First of all I've been researching to see if Dying/Bleaching is safe in pregnancy and I'm super paranoid and thinking of baby over vanity lol.

After finding plenty of dye info I've decided to stick with directions dyes with gloves in a well ventilated room.

However I couldn't find much information on bleach... I found many conflicting comments but none of the sort that answer my questions.

I've decided to check out MP's Flashlightening Bleach kit's instructions and if it says "Not to use in pregnancy" then I won't. However I've not got a pack right now so...

Does it say anything like this in such instructions? Does anyone have any to confirm this or deny?

Also it'd be cool to share your views/comments on hair bleaching in pregnancy as ones I seen are either the same or out of date.

Thanks.

MH.

I'm not 100% sure on this one (as I've never been pregnant) but a friend of mine who bleaches her hair was recently and she dyed her hair brown throughout her pregnancy then went back blonde when the baby was born just to be on the safe side.

Most stuff online says the risk is from peroxide / ammonia entering your blood stream through contact with your scalp?? Some people say their doctors advised they wait until their second trimester....maybe check with your doctor? But if chemicals can get into your blood stream through absorption through your skin it seems like a good idea to avoid it whilst pregnant.

Directions will be fine because its a vegetable dye, could you do an ombrΓ© until the baby is born? (Adore veggie dye matching your natural colour from the roots to mid lengths, then a bright colour through the mid lengths and ends?) Brown into turquoise looks AMAZING?

Better safe than sorry, highlighting is probably better since the bleach doesn't touch the scalp, but those fumes is probably not such a good thing.

Googled to see what was being said and found this article and the comments interesting.

It's all anecdotal, mind you.  There aren't any studies that say with certainty because it's unethical to test on pregnant women.  πŸ˜‰  Still.  If the anecdotal evidence weighs strongly enough for you - then you should be just fine.

I had my hair coloured and permed during both of my pregnancies and both of my children are amazing intelligent people at nearly 15 and 18 years of age.  πŸ™‚

I would agree with the info on the first trimester. I'd be worried not so much with the physical contact of the bleach to your scalp as breathing in the fumes, peroxide powder etc while dyeing your hair.

During the second trimester the baby is much stronger so if anything does get in your system the baby can deal with it better but to be safe I'd still make sure I was right by an open window.

During the third trimester, if you're anything like I was with my daughter you're gonna feel so big and heavy that your hair is gonna be the last thing you worry about. But at that point the baby is at its strongest so that would be the safest time.

Usually hairdressers have large, well ventilated premises and they mix the bleach in the back of the shop so if you're worried maybe see a professional. It'll mean less for you to do and you can get pampered. I'd do that and make the most of it! πŸ˜€

In reality its the heightened risk of a reaction to start with. When your pregnant you can take a reactions to things that never bothered you before.

Whilst I worked in the salon we did carry out dyes and bleaches with some strange results. Sometimes hair doesnt take as well, sometimes it really does go a funny tone. This goes for darker dyes too!

On a personal note I've always make the agreement with myself to avoid the first trimester and skin test always in the 2nd trimester.

Everyone, thank you for the comments. They're a great think.

Well my order of dyes/bleached arrived today. Checked MP's instructions myself and its says nothing to do with pregnancy. So I'm going to go for it. But not because of that missing information alone don't panic. I have other reasons aswell.

My Unborn child is my number one priority and always will be. Vanity isn't important.

Anyway, I've reached the 2nd Trimester but I'll still be waiting a bit longer before I do anything. Probably a couple weeks.

(Btw, This is my second child and I had my hair bleached and dyed when I was pregnant the first time but I was unaware that I was pregnant at that point and my child turned out fine. Now that I discovered the publics concerns and my own, I thought I'd ask some questions. I worry about many do/do nots in pregnancy.)

Wish me luck!

How I look at it is if it was dangerous, hairdressers wouldn't be allowed to work when pregnant. Good luck!

I also had a simularish thought. If the bleach was Baby Harming (Which it can be if you breathe in fumes obviously but you get my point.) They would advise pregnant woman NOT to use it on their product. (Add text in the instructions for example) They have signs like this for many other things for pregnant women to avoid but I guess you could argue that there isn't one for the Bleach because you can't exactly test this on pregnant women but I also guess you would hear about it if there was an uproar.

Since I've been researching this alot and looking for advice. I have a better idea about the stuff and I'll be making sure Baby will be okay as Baby comes first πŸ™‚

Thanks :D.
