I have dark brown hair, but since I've been swimming it's a little lighter with highlights. (from the chlorene obviously)
If I got a blonde semi-perm dye from the store, would it lighten my hair?  I am planning on lightening it so that I can eventually do red henna.  I know I would have to wait a while before using the henna after a hair dye with metallic contents. Smiley

You'll have to check the box to find this out. Some blonde dyes do lighten your hair a little, some recommend using a bleach first. Basically read through the ingredients to see what's in the dye, it's always displayed on the side of the box. It usually says somewhere on the box about whether your hair needs pre lightening. If it's a regular box dye some of them aren't sealed at the top (it's why I always open them and check that everytyhing is there before I buy one!) But you can get the instructions out in the store and take a look if there's no indication on the box about pre lightening.

Yeah as said above the box will say whether it will work on dark brown - if it doesn't say and only says results for light brown etc then it won't work.  Some brands will be "better" for dark hair than others.

You can also get extra strong dyes but bleach would work better unless you want a gingery shade

Semi-permanent colours, regardless of what they are, will not lighten hair.

Only peroxide or bleach can lighten hair. And the sun.
