Triple helix not healing
« on: 29 May 16 / 01:05 AM »
I had my triple helix done about 10 weeks ago and they are still playing up , one especially keeps getting blood out of it, Still can't sleep on them either,
My question is can I change the earrings now as I'm sure the bars on 2 are not long enough . I got 2 with the flat backs and one with a ball back I find the flat backs are the ones giving me trouble.
I have tried different ways to clean, alcohol wipes then just leaving them for a couple weeks to see if that would help and now cleaning them daily with tee tree antiseptic spray which makes them come right for a day or 2 then they are sore again. Have tried salt water bathes also but they are just not settling, any ideas or is this normal for that type of piercing ?
Oh and they are itchy so I'm always rubbing my outta ear (not the piercings)
Thanks for any suggestions xxx

Perfectly normal. Cartilage often takes a loooong time to heal; 10  weeks isn't nearly long enough to even think about them being healed.

If you want to change to barbells, go to the place that did the piercings and show them. They'll be able to tell you what's going on and if necessary change the jewellery for you safely.

The "grumpiness" you describe is pretty normal. I tend to do nothing at all to my piercings except clean the crusty stuff off in the shower. The healing tissue on the inside of the hole is incredibly delicate and moving the jewellery during cleaning will damage it and you have to start healing again. Itching is actually good as it's a sign of healing but try hard not to rub as again that can cause damage. Also you had three done at the same time? That's a pretty big deal for your body to handle and will take longer than a single piercing (but probably quicker than getting one done, waiting for it to heal, then getting the next, etc.)

I know it's frustrating but it's worth it for the pretties! I had my conch done last August and it's not healed yet but I'm just ignoring it for the most part now...

Thanks for the reply Tabithablue
Yeah three at once , must have been feeling a bit brave that day lol.
I had them done overseas but did call into a piercer yesterday as I wanted another piercing done but might wait until these heal a bit more and my ear feels normal before getting more on that one . She said the bars they used are too short, typical I had to get short bars 😂
I'll try leaving them for a while and just do as you've done and just clean in the shower and hope they heal a bit faster than they are.
Thanks so much , helps to know it's normal xxxx

I would avoid getting any further piercings until these have healed, three at a time is the maximum recommended.
Cartilage piercings can often take up to 18 months to fully heal.
Having the right jewellery should help them to settle, are the bars you have now quality titanium?
I would also avoid any harsh cleaning methods, as often these irritate the skin further. Just rinse in the shower, or use sea salt to soak if they are crusty.

 Thanks Wicked Pixie
No they are stainless steel or Stirling silver I think.
Think I should have researched having this many pierced at once lol,
I've got a high pain threshold that helps me do stupid things 😂
Will just shower and leave them and see how it goes
Thank you xxx

With ill-fitting surgical steel they may never heal. I would get them switched out for the correct size titanium. Have it done at a piercers so the jewellery is sterile, and the trauma is minimal, don't just buy bigger bars and swap them yourself.

I second Wicked Pixies advice about changing the bars. I'm a slow healer when it comes to any sort of piercing unfortunately for me lol, my scaffold & rook took by far the longest time to heal especially my scaffold! After 15 months it was still so sore I was debating to remove it as I couldn't even sleep on that side where I'd be so sore. After to leaving it alone it eventually healed & is now *touch wood* fine & hasn't been an issue since healing 3 years ago now.

Thirding! Titanium bars of the correct length, swapped out in a sterile environment.

Got them changed guys. Bars as she said sleepers are no good until they heal.
The lady that pierced me had stuck in 6mm bars and they had stared embedding in my ear! Ggrrr so now I have a 10 and two 12mm and they feel so much better already. Hopefully healed better in a couple of weeks xxx

Glad they feel better.
The correct size bar is absolutely essential. It needs to be big enough to allow for any swelling but not so big there is excessive movement. (That is also why rings are not suitable as initial jewellery)

I know I can't wear silver or stainless steel in any piercing without it itching, even the ear lobe piercings I had done as a kid 30 years ago! Titanium is a godsend when it comes to piercings!

Lately I've found a cooled down chamomile tea bag helps reduce swelling in irritated piercings for me, not sure if it will work for everyone but maybe worth a try! (Make sure to dry it afterwards though!)
