"Oil slick" hair from MTV
« on: 24 Nov 15 / 04:01 PM »

The "oil slick" style has been making the rounds lately, MTV have posted a tutorial from Aura Friedman. It's a  multitonal look that works particularly well on dark hair.

I wouldn't have thought adding black to darken works so well, I just pick a more pigmented dye when I want something darker. I wonder which black that is. That and using different colours on each horizontal section so they are different when stacked up is another idea I hadn't seen around here before, a bit different to the usual rainbow or ombre. I think it's very impressive for a salon style!

Hmm... It looks nice under the light... but it looks a bit sickly out of the direct light shining on it. I also can't see it lasting more than a wash or two and then she'll be stuck with a mishmash of icky browns. I think the yellow looks odd, not a very pleasant colour.

I can't really see the point in adding the black still.

I do actually like the look, just don't think this is anything like the best one. Sorry! :/

If you'd like to see more of that horizontal stacking and random colours, have a look at Guy Tang, it's something he's been doing a lot recently. I can't stand watching him, but some of the colours he does are pretty :) I just have the sound off! He has a friend that does the same as well, she's been in some of his vids, I can't remember her name though! I have to admit, it's something I would have been sceptical that it looked good, but now I want to try it. My hair is no way long enough though!

I would imagine the black is the new black mixer from Pravana, designed to darken and mute bright colours. http://www.esteticamagazine.com/products/item/9542-pravana-got-your-black-vivids-black-launches-in-october
Guy Tangs friend is Rebecca Taylor, she is a lot easier to watch than him lol.

 I'd never heard of Guy Tang when I first read this, but the other day I saw one of his videos and instantly thought "this must be the guy people watch with the sound off!"
